Super - chilled salt water in Esky.

Briefly, #3 Son heard about this 'Theory', that freezing heavily salted water will keep your Esky (ChillyBin ? ) colder and for longer.

Well, after a week away, the evidence has returned, This arvo measured at - 7 degrees. Tells me it was so cold in there his hand near-froze when fishing around for a beverage !
That was their storage freezer to feed half a dozen stomachs, so not a small one...

Took a long, long time to freeze the ice blocks... Engel flat out ran for days to freeze the mixture.IMG_1929.jpg

Fill with crushed ice then cover with salt.

Nice real world test. Super - chilled salt water in Esky.

If he has an Engel, why the need for the frozen saline?
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

The saltier the water the lower the temp needs to be to freeze it. Many moons ago we used to semi freeze prawns in just very salty sea water , many times the water was tested at -8 and still not frozen, just a slurry.

Yes, he'd been told about it at work... Explaining the 'science' didn't quite convince him... - hence his need to DO the experiment.
    - The Engel was also in use for the trip.

Several grog shops have a machine that uses high salinity slurry to chill bottles before you leave the store.

Most Trawlers have a very cold brine slurry in huge tanks just below the deck that the fish end up in as they come out of the nets.

I think they used to run at around -5 degrees.

Which is why sea water in the Antarctic doesn't freeze at zero degrees - currently measured at -1.8 C:

It's also how people used to make and freeze ice-cream, using a salt slurry.
