    Dirty business.

    Hi Forumites.
We've recently sold the van and gone to a camper tralier so we can go much further off road. Now the question, is without park toilet faclilities what is the best way of doing it and getting rid of it?
We have in the past used a frame type toilet with a seat just like home and dug a hole underneath which has been OK but are there better ways?
    All advices appreciated.
    Alan.

Mrs Vlad is at me to get a port-a-potty. Says the modern ones are really good, no mess etc etc and that may well be true BUT they still take up room in the truck, still have to be stored horizontally and still have to be emptied somewhere by someone (guess who!).

My dog has the same problem every time I scream at her for going near the gardens, I think the accepted idea is to dig a hole, isn't it. Simple yet effective , I cannot see a problem if your using unbleached paper and don't bury plastic bags and so forth. If you go to an eco shop they sell composite toilets basically the same as a hole in the ground with a filter and a vent. Yet they charge thousands. Put it this way the idea for a sewer was invented only 2500years ago. How old is the human race?

    Options
    1. Buy a shovel
    2. don't eat constipation wouldn't take to long to set in.
    3. Depends undergarments
    4. Burn the evidence with a drop of diesel(not really advisable for the bush)

    They are the go Vlad.
I prefer the tool entrenching / folding shovel and hole method - but with a wife and a few girls, Portapotty is dead easy.
They don't take much room, seal excellently, don't need to be stored horizontally (but I dont know why you wouldnt), and break everything down really well into liquid that doesn't stink the place out.

Tip: Do not put wipes or other foreign objects in them though - it is no fun unclogging/clearing/cleaning certain items out, early in the morning on a gut full of guinness and jamesons

Oh yeah - i did get a BRAND NEW one for $20 though as opposed to $145! Compliments of a caravan upgrade from one of the RRCQ folks

He should give you $40 if he's actually used it.

My wife and two daughters (8&10) happily use the folding seat over the hole set up. Easy to pack as well.

One tip though, burn the paper before you fill in the hole. Animals dig up "the site" because of the paper not the other bits.

It's true really, a friend of mine tried it years ago. He got his kids to do their thing in three holes in a row, two burnt the paper one didn't. the next morning, only the unburnt one had been dug up!

    Dirty business.

Thanks for the replies. It looks like it maybe as well to stick with what we presently do, burn and bury.
I've seen the old blokes emptying their buckets and bogs in caravan parks and thought then about how crude it was instead of getting up and going for a walk in the night. Yuk.
    Happy digging.
    Alan.
