    Fuel.

We just went over a few suburbs & found we were in an "island" of unleaded at 43 cents below the rest of Melb SE Suburbs. Priority at home was filling my Series 3 & 5 jerries at 112.9. I might not make any money on the stock market but this helps..2021-01-19 (1).jpg

That stuff happens in Geelong quite often.

The servos in the south end of Moorabool St will have 91ULP at 147.9 and others like APCO on the Portarlington Rd will be constant at 109. (LPG there is 59.9)

Even in Drysdale I can buy 91ULP for 109 and the motor in the ute doesn't even ping!

Where I live it's 155.9. Ten mins away there's an Apollo where it's 111.9. They're not always cheap. but they are enough times to be worth the drive to support them. Petrol's a racket.

    Seeking clarification here...
There was an article in our local rag about various petrol Octane numbers, their useage blah blah. (Paper wrapped up garbage... SWMBO - say no more!)

Anyway, failing memory tells me that there are legislative / legal / ENFORCE-able rules about the octane rating. ie, '91' MUST be... 91 RON. Ditto '95'. Penalties apply.
But.... '98' it appears, is a different kettle of gill-bearing aquatic craniate animals that lack limbs with digits... - "98" MUST be no less than '95'
    -
Does anyone in relevant industries have further info ? - I buy 95 whenever it matches as usual $ of 91.

Both my current V6 cars, Camry and Magna run smooother and further on '95', though I've yet to do a proper cost-benefit analysis (scared of answer!) But... I suspect 98 affects me more than the engine....

As a comparison, when we were an Item, TheLady Sarah was indiscriminate in her lust for flammable spirits.

A family member who owns a JAGUAR - we thought owing a LR was insane.... - and drives into the boonies, always carries bottle of 'Octane Booser' in case he picks up a load of watered down fuel. Or 98 is not available...

Actually, this also came to light when learning to fly. We used moGas 95 in our Jabirus, but not 98. - 98 could yield a teensy bit more range... but only when desperate such as (too?) long cross-country legs.

No Idea J2. Have always used 91 RON in the Discovery EFI & still use it in the current Mazda.

I believe a half a bottle of Metho is good for dewatering. It makes a brine of the water & apparently burns it off as it passes through the engine, although having said that I had a problem years ago with the operation of the Discovery & did the above but found later it was the MAF that was cactus & was replaced. The thinking was that as we live in a moist Rain & Fog atmosphere & the servos couldn't guarantee the Tanker hoses were water free, it seemed to make sense. I still suspect that Tanker Dispensing equipment is not 100% Kosher but haven't used Meths in the Mazda but the V8i & the Mazda donks are "slightly" different.

Whilst on the subject of octane/ron...

Down here we have only two type of fuel, 95 or 98 (which one company sells as actually 97). So let's call them regular and premium. Regular fuel has been 10% bio ethanol since about a year but premium fuel is a maximum of 5%. Two brands explicitly state on their website that premium (98) has _no_ bio ethanol added.

I prefer filling up with that stuff since my (older) cars like it much better than that bio-crap.

Does australia have something similar? Or at least bio ethanol free petrol?

    Cheers,
    -P
