Sex and gender are different things - sex, as in chromosomal sex, is just biology. Gender (masculine, feminine etc) is socially constructed and can change. The problem is that, in an apparent attempt to be .... I don’t know, cool .... lots of government departments and other groups decided in the 90s that they would describe sex as gender, which it’s not, and have done a disservice to everyone. Kind of like how they went through a stage of describing all Aboriginal people as Koori, until Aboriginal groups in northern NSW started saying, no Kooris around here we’re Murri .... When I’m filling in forms I usually cross out “gender” and write “sex” and then tick the correct box.
All true, for a given definition. In the Romance languages, objects have gender. The Germanics even include a neutral. But when gender is applied to higher living organisms, it is most certainly NOT a construct. It in fact a construct to suggest that it is. No amount of linguistic gymnastics can change chromosomes.
French language is very sexist, ''' LE'' is masculine and "LA" is feminine they will have to come up with a genderless word for THE. Oh the cost tom reprint all books, signs etc. Sacre bleu.
