    Moving to Tasmania

Well it was a big decision, but today we started the process of selling up and take the plunge and move to Tassie, we have no ties here really and we have been thinking about it for quite some time anyway.

What a day, this is a logistical and expensive nightmare and we are only at day one of the process, one issue we have are the bikes(5 of them)if we use a container(suggested by the mover) with the house contents and the bikes, we'll need two containers and at $4000 a pop plus extras, that's a lot of money, the bikes take up half a container, the house contents are not going to fit in the other half, hence 2 containers.

I'm hoping a motorcycle transport company will be cheaper to transport the bikes over than $4000.

Anyone that has any tips about a move like this would be very appreciated.
    Cheers Baz.

you can get 6 bikes on a car trailer.
hire a car trailer one way for about a week from where you are to melbourne, tow the trailer down and take it across on the ferry
ferry it back and have some one pick it up and drop it off for you, I know a guy.

failing that if you know someone who has a car trailer in melbourne hire one one way for a couple of days drop it at melbourne after cross loading onto a mates trailer then use your mates trailer to do the ferry bit.

you can also fit a fair whack of other stuff onto a car trailer with the bikes.

you can get 4 bikes onto a GS 6x6 Im sure theres some down this way that could be borrowed in exchange for fuel money and joining you on the jaunt over on the ferry...

you can get 3 bikes onto a dual cab and I reckon a 8x5 tandem holds 2 bikes, and you know, I know a guy whom has both.

    Firstly, welcome to Tassie.

Have you thought of a mini-container? There are smaller that 20' ones about.

Give Richardson's Motorcycles in Launceston (Harley agents) a call and ask about spare space, or who to contact.

Would it be cheaper to do several trips on the Spirit, riding them accross, flying back?
Or get some mates to ride them over on the boat, then fly home?

If you have a suitable trailer, put them behind a tow vehicle that is coming anyway?
Even buy a suitable ute for a second driver to bring. Some goods could come in the ute/van/wagon. Then sell the extra vehicle here.

Or arrange for a member/mate already living here but coming home to bring the trailer with them.

Some removalists can take extra gear to fill out a load. If drained of fuel, they may take the bikes. Means using a different removalist than the ones taking the rest, seeing they have said container is full already.

Try talking to "TasFreight", for a quote.

When here, remember that Tassie roads have bends, both horizontal and vertical, and can get slippery as rain falls. Many two-wheelers have come to grief here.

You haven't mentioned the area you are headed for, but consider sending an advance load to a friendly recipient to take advantage of space on sailing dates etc. Doing a "later load" means relying on shippers to get the load on and usually involves delays.

    Just thoughts.

I'll check out the Harley guys for help and for the welcome rovers4, trivial fact, I began life in Tassie, from 3 days old to 2yrs old before moving back to the mainland.

Hi Dave, thanks mate, we have 2 trailers as well but only the D4 has a towbar and making multiple trips works out more expensive.

Living where we are now without Kerry is just not the same anymore, and she wanted to move to Tassie eventually anyway, so it was inevitable we would make the move as daunting as it is, I think it is the right move.
    Cheers Baz.

Baz, have you considered a small, Eurocar truck?
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

    Hi,
A mate from S. Aust moved here years ago.
Bought a reasonable midsize flat tray truck, loaded it with his stuff to bring down on the ferry and sold the truck after a few months here and made a small profit.
Circumstances may be different now of course, but may be worth checking Gumtree for truck costs either end.
    Cheers

Where are you going in Tasmania Barry?

My Mother moved there some years ago, then my niece and now a friend with a family of five has made the move. I have a plan as well, just have to get the wife on-board.

We were supposed to go for 2 months this summer but Covid made things too uncertain.

Have you looked at using a bidding site like truckit? Often drivers are on there looking for back loads.
