    Defence Landies

    I was out at Gallipoli Barracks on a job this morning and noted with interest the army are running new TD5 Defenders ... 5 speed box complete with aircon and all .....

    Tho in the words or one of the mere mortals I spoke to ....... "Those jobbies are only for the bloody officers" ......

    I often wondered if they were still flogging the last dregs out of the old 110 Isuzu 4 speeders.

    Rosco - The 110 Isuzu engined LRs are still in common use. They must be the worst driven, yet most over maintained Land Rovers in the world. Most of the ones we see have only about 50 000km on the clock, yet have been flogged within an inch of their lives. Like me, there are plenty of people lined up to grab one when the army finally pensions them off.

    During the Bushranger Phase 1 Project, Tenix Defence (then BAeA) reactivated the engineering data pack and production process sheets from the Land Rover Perentie project on behalf of Land Rover Australia. As these datapacks had not been maintained, Tenix gained experience, unique within Australia, in process engineering for high volume production of military vehicles. Tenix manufactured over 300 vehicles under this contract (4 mockups, 4 prototypes, 265 new vehicles and 53 conversions). No other Australian military vehicle manufacturer has exceeded this number since the original Perentie build. The design content in the Bushranger contract included the design of four new 6x6 variants and one new 4x4 variant for the motorisation role. A large number of design improvements were also included in this program.

    Other significant features of the Bushranger Phase 1 program included:
    • 4x4 Body Roll and Payload - the in-service RFSV had been acknowledged as a difficult vehicle to handle when laden. Under the Bushranger Phase 1 program a similar new variant, known as the Surveillance and Reconnaissance Vehicle, was required. To improve the vehicle body roll characteristics, Tenix undertook a design program to minimise mass, vehicle moment of inertia in roll, and adapt a Land Rover anti sway kit on the vehicle which improved the handling characteristics within the constraints of the existing design.
    • Wheel and Axle Alignment - Tenix redesigned the 6x6 Perentie chassis frame to improve tolerancing on functional dimensions, provided missing functional dimensions and worked through problems with the frame manufacturer to ensure that the new Bushranger 6x6 vehicles had correct wheel alignment.
    • Body to Chassis Frame Alignment - Tenix developed extensive experience in body and frame alignment through the design and manufacture of 168 6x6 modules (Infantry Mobility, Assault Pioneer & Mortar variants).
    • Roll Over Protection Structure. Tenix designed and manufactured roll over protection structures certified by ATEA for 4x4 and 6x6 vehicles which complied with the Army’s Project Transafe requirements. These ROPS are the only productionised ROPS structures in service and are now fitted to 43 Bushranger 4x4 vehicles and 168 6x6 vehicles.
    • Helilift. A rectification program including mechanical testing was developed and conducted by Tenix for the helilift points on the Bushranger 4x4 vehicles.

    I am surprised that they had a TD5 on there, they seem to be getting alot of cruisers for the officers cars these days. 12 months ago the only landies seen were the 110's

    how does one get hold of a tenix kit to convert a drum rear 110 to disks??

    Yep, but the only trytoo's Ive seen are plain old white ones. The Landies were in army livery ... all tricked up with a flash low profile full length roof rack and all the usual other army landie bits
    .......... I'd almost give away the left onion for one ...

    there was a once off buy of the td5's which was to fill a short fall and were issued to head quarter commands

    the 100 is still the main 4bee.

    i have not heard anything about tenix upgrading the fleets rear axles

    i will be catching up with a mate tonight who is a fleet manager in briz, i will see what info he has

    i know defence are working on the new tender to replace the landrover fleet, the replacement will need to have some sort of armour plating, 2012 we may get an idea when we are getting them

    i have been trying to find the order number for the low profile full length roof rack, no luck so far

    THe Ambulance prototype back in 1998 was very cool. Got to play with it at work. Don't know If it went ahead or not.
