Relying on your GPS to determine where the differant speed zones are instead of paying attention to the road signage whilst you are driving is complete folly.

This may depend on the gps and the preferences set by the user.
Yes, there are some outdated speed limit signs positions, but even so, the reminders given make the odds of a traffic infringement that much longer.
My new Garmin pings upcoming lower limit signs a few 100m before they are in sight and tripple pings any excess speed above the limit with tedious accuracy by the amount I choose to set.

the description of the Canberra speed cameras is I think fairly standard.

we have trailer mounted cameras here which are regularly moved around a number of sites.

I don't think they would raise much revenue though , as I drive by corrected speed from my ecu and I am nearly always faster than surrounding traffic.

But how do you know you've missed a speed sign if you haven't seen it.......???? My GPS complains at just 1km over, so no biggie. One of my rules for driving is, I only drive as fast as I can see, which means I will do less than the limit if it is raining, dark, twisty roads, blind crests, etc. Country roads are often marked at 100 kph no matter what condition they are in, the worst one I can think of is the road down from O'Reilly's in Canungra, IIRC it is marked at 100 but I was doing more like 60 in the dark, with massive trees just inches from the road. The latest survey shows 61 per cent of Canberrans believe the technology's main purpose is to raise revenue (the ACT government has always denied this).


So with two new camera vans soon to be deployed, the ABC sought to prove, one way or another, whether the existing eight vans have been used to maximise the flow of dollars to Treasury.
The good news? The government could make much more money — millions of dollars extra each year — by tweaking slightly where it puts its cameras.
The bad news? It's not going to do this. Because despite what most Canberrans think, that's not the government's goal.

Personally, and GPS that pings or makes any other noise would be consigned to the bin pretty quick if I couldn't turn them off - my biggest peeve about vehicles and vehicle tech is why they all have to beep and bong all the bloody time.

Similar to Qld,they say the speed cameras are only used where there have been accidents or incidents due to speeding.

Hmm,there is often one left on a long downhill section of the service road parallel to the M1,not far from where we live.
Been here 22yrs,never seen an accident or incident ever on that section of road.[bighmmm]

Yes, that would be why they are liberally sprinkled on the Gungahlin Drive extension, a road built to freeway standard as a major transit route with its speed limit decided by fears over bad publicity due to noise complaints. It was initially 80KM/h but bad press forced an inquiry and the lifting to 90KM/h. It is still probably 10 KM/h slower than it should be at most times outside peak but that 90KM/h speed limit is a good little earner, particularly on the southbound stretch past Black Mountain where the speed vans sit on a steep downhill gradient.

In my, ever so humble, opinion there are far to many speed limits!
It seems to me there are speed limits everywhere from 5kph to 110kph.
It seems to me it would be much better to just have say 4 or 5 different speeds & that's it.
Say 40, 60, 80, 110.
Less confusion I think.

Hi,
Ditto, but I perservered with the controls and turned off things like bend, rail crossing, and other rediculous warnings. "Bip" for an upcoming lower limit and "bip, bip, bip" for 1km/h over said limit is better than the alternative from the left seat.
