    Road Safety or Revenue?

It's always been my stance that more danger gets through enforcement cameras than they eliminate. The argument that cameras free up police for other road safety related duties, simply doesn't wash. Politely it's spin, realistically it's lies. The odds of being caught drink driving, in my area are, in my estimate, less than 10%.
Bring back visible policing I say.

Could not agree more. A traffic camera offence is just another bill in the mail. Cameras don't prevent crime, the merely record it.

About ten years ago there was a major accident on the M1 near Altona, at a quiet time of day. Analysis of the skid marks and impact with a tree suggested speeds in excess of 150-160. Eyewitness accounts concurred. The driver lost control and the car crossed all the lanes, mostly sideways. The commodore was largely unrecognisable. I know, I saw it minutes later.

There are, of course, many similar stories. I bring this one up because the presence of just one marked police car would have likely prevented the loss of five young lives.

In Victoria, traffic camera revenue is a line item in the budget.

If any camera is used it should be used on red light enforcement. Damned if I enter a light-controlled intersection these days without first making sure the idiots are stopped either side of me.

    Hmmm,
I believe it is illegal to put a roadside sign advising "speed trap" or "radar" etc, and fair enough, as it is obstructing police doing there job.
    BUT...
What if the sign said "revenue raising" instead?
Shouldn't be any issue with that because it has been stated from on high that it doesn't happen, and therefore can't be applicable.
    Cheers

Agree 100% - red light running is getting worse every year - need more red light cameras - it wouldn't stop them doing it the first time, but once they get the fine and know it's at that intersection, then it certainly would increase safety IMO. Speed cameras are just revenue raising and don't do squat for safety.

Another vote for revenue raising. I have never seen or heard a convincing argument that tells me that speed cameras are a safety device.

All speed cameras do is make people spend more time looking at the speedo rather than the road & what is going on around them.
