Bring back visible policing I say.
Could not agree more. A traffic camera offence is just another bill in the mail. Cameras don't prevent crime, the merely record it.
About ten years ago there was a major accident on the M1 near Altona, at a quiet time of day. Analysis of the skid marks and impact with a tree suggested speeds in excess of 150-160. Eyewitness accounts concurred. The driver lost control and the car crossed all the lanes, mostly sideways. The commodore was largely unrecognisable. I know, I saw it minutes later.
There are, of course, many similar stories. I bring this one up because the presence of just one marked police car would have likely prevented the loss of five young lives.
In Victoria, traffic camera revenue is a line item in the budget.
