Need help finding hinges to connect an aluminium lid to my No 5 camper trailer

    Hello wise forum.

I am in the process of getting an aluminium “lid” made for my No5 Trailer as part of a camper build and am getting hung up on which hinges to use.

    • The goal is to use a hinge that provides security but also allows removal of the lid if I want
    • Will the hinge I use potentially cause corrosion due to the dissimilar materials of the aluminium lid or the No5 trailer
    • The hinges needs to survive a life of bouncing around on corrugated roads. Should I bolt or weld them on?

    If you’d asked last week...

A friend just had an aluminium lid fitted to his No. 5
He has gas struts on it to hold it up.
If you like, PM your email address and I’ll pass it on to him and I’m sure he could let you know what he did. I can’t take pix as he’s gone on holiday to Vic and I’m on hols in SA.

Are you getting a fabricator to make the Al lid?
If so get them to weld a few lengths of solid material to the lower edge with a space between.
Counter bore the material for an 8mm pin.
Then on the trailer weld a matching steel solid block with 8mm hole.
Make up 8mm pins from stainless with Circlips to retain
Zerks on all fittings a squirt of grease will keep your dissimilar metal problem at bay

If you use round material especially on trailer with the pins removed and lid off the hinges won’t be obtrusive

When mating dissimilar metals, drip check will weatherproof and prevent galvanic corrosion. Available from paint and panel beating suppliers.

When I want gear like this, I look up my local marine hardware supplier, and get stainless steel fittings.

    Just a suggestion!

Thanks for all the help and suggestions everyone. This forum always produces quality!

    * Thanks Ron. Pm sent.

    * Steve. Great suggestions, and yes I am getting it made for me. My welds are ok but not in alloy.

    * Loan Rangie. Ive seen that awesome site have considered buying some of their steel and alloy bullet hinges. I was thinking of welding half an alloy bullet hinge to the lid and half a steel one to the tub and making them mate. I still have the issue of a brass pin joining them which I thought I could overcome by inserting nylon bushes into each half and swapping out the pin for thinner stock. Still kind of considering this but it sounds like I may be over thinking it

    * V8Ian. Will look into drip check. May be the solution.

    * Drivesafe. Whitworths are always selling me stuff. Will check it out.

If you went this way, then greasing the pin with Tef Gel would look after any galvanic problems.

    Cheers Glen
