Kinda depends how far you drive it, Ian.
Personally, I'd get the lock nut off with stilsons or something and replace it ( them ) with ordinary nuts. Who's going to steal the wheels? I own the car and even with the right key for the locknut I couldn't get the bloody wheels off:bat:
Try driving an undersize socket onto the nut.
I replaced my locking wheel nuts last year just in case one of them wants to play silly buggers.
Pretty sure I got them off TR spares in Sth Aust, didnt cost all that much for 5 of them.
DG
I'll be replacing them with normal nuts tomorrow. SBL have all the keys and can supply the nuts.
The locknuts are already damaged from the lazy, braindead tyre fitter who used an impact gun to do them up to three gazillion ft/lb, before running over them with a 120 ft/lb tension wrench. :bat:
I remember, 40 years ago, getting tyres on my XA falcon, and having a flat about five hours later. Car had mags (!) and locknuts. Could I get the wheel off?? Gotta love tyre fitters and rattlers. Bit different these days, when, at least in Vic, there is a chain of responsibilty.
The moron tyre fitters think that the manufacturer's specified torque in a minimum. The tyre shop had to replace my adapter but at the time, I didn't realise they had also damaged the nuts.
Unknown to me, they also did a complimentary wheel alignment, then declared the front end shot, after a road test. Odd how it came good after I had it realigned to LR spec. The damned tyres have a higher IQ than the fitters!
