Actually, the model "Land Rover" (a particular model Rover) became a marque (a brand of cars covering a number of models) to solve the problem of what to call the down-market Rangerover that needed to be linked to the successful Rangerover (but not too closely) and Landrover. The solution was to take the name from the Land Rover, use this as a marque name for all three models, rename the Land Rover as "Land Rover Defender", the Rangerover as "Land Rover Rangerover" and name the new model "Land Rover Discovery". The subsequent other new models were similarly named.
