    A CV per year..

    Thats seems to be the current replacement rate..

    Broke another on the weekend, on Hell Hill in the Watagans.

    This time it really let go. Basically only one caliper bolt holding the hub on. After Chris & Ross stuffed as much of the cavity as they could with a leather belt, we drove it a couple of kms like this, to the blacktop.

    Usual argument with the NRMA call centre who always want to send a patrolman first. And, again, I was caught in between the NRMA's 50 km and 100 km tow limits - @77 kms, I had to pay.

    Oh the joys.

    we must have missed all the action! had a group of 14 stuck in the bog hole at the bottom of the power line track. cant fit all 14 on one side at once, so 2 at a time out of the 14 only 4 made it, i recovered 6

    had an asian bloke turn up in a petrol 80series, he almost made it ceot the rev limiter/valve bounce stop him pretty sure hes done a big end bearing

    saw an nrma ute driving around at the pines round 1pm, was he looking for you max??

    No, not us.

    That bog hole must have been busy! We saw too other groups in it.

    i'm guessing tusker had no option other than to drive without removing the busted cv, i now carry all the tools to remove a cv at any time

    i busted one over the easter break this year whilist driving around a private property which we were camping at. day one would you believe of a five day camping trip. i was lucky we could leave the defender on the hill till the next morning as we didn't have a socket/spanner for the caliper bolts. removed it the next morning and continued driving for the rest of the trip, having a front locker was also handy for the rest of the trip.

    i also modded the brake line bracket so that i don't have to disconnect the brake line next time, just save bleeding the system

    It could have been broken for quite a while, days even, before the others pointed out that the left front wasn't turning. There wasn't any snapping noise to speak of.

    It drove ok after that, although obviously I didn't attempt any other obstacles. No noises, steered fine. I asumed a clean break somewhere, no need to pull the CV at lunchtime.

    Wrong.

    After lunch the grinding noises started, and within 50 metres the wheel was canting over as per the pics. Daylight showing where it shouldn't be. We made a temporary bearing as best we could with a leather belt to take up some of the slack, & I elected to attempt to limp to the blacktop. If it came off, we'd rig up a skid & drag it. As it happens it made it.

    We'll never know what broke in what order. I guess the moral of the story is don't assume, pull the CV on the spot.

    Now to find yet another pair of County CVs, & graft on the ABS ring.

    i drove a few hundred metres and the first i knew i had a problem was i couldn't turn to the left, did not hear it break

    Interesting experience Max. I've never done a CV....yet.

    Could have been worse....it could have been on Cape York with a $3000 tow...not happened to me but I met some one there that was in tears after the experience.

    Doing Jenolan & Caves to Caves this weekend I guess your trucks not up to it, its going to be gooy again.
