The diabetic dog thread

Well my nearly 12 yr old English Toy Terrier was pretty poorly for a couple of weeks so i took him to see one of his favourite people, the local vet...

a grand later we left the clinic armed with insulin, special dry food, sharps and a dietary guide or two

a dammed expensive exercise it has to be said..

after some research i found some well recommended dietary guides and recipes which i am now making for him

buying insulin at the local vet isn't a cheap exercise at $110 a month and the sharps are another $33 a month on top of that

i found a few places on the net in Au that sell the insulin for $65 but you need a prescription which the local vet charges $30 for on top of the normal consultation fee

sharps are also way cheaper thru the online vet supplies places, at $33 for a 100 instead of $33 for 30

how are other people handling this sort of thing ?

i know what she is talking about...

just gone through the first bag of hill's diet food and he gets 7.5cc of insulin twice a day

expensive stuff on both counts

met a guy today who has a diabetic cat he has been injecting for a few years... bad enough doing a dog, a cat would be next level i imagine

all a big learning curve at this stage... i will be well versed if i even need insulin

My Cav Spaniel has a couple of those shocking hereditary diseases - heart - mitral valve disease and Syringomyelia which is the formation of fluid filled cysts within the spinal cord. His meds can be expensive but having said that the vet med charges are reasonable. Don't ignore using the local pharmacy either. Some meds I obtain under prescription from the local pharmacy and are way cheaper than from the vet clinic. But $30 for a scrip from the vet............wow... I get charged half that amount.

The other advantage I have is that I have maintained pet health insurance which gives me an 80% refund on his medical needs up to $10G per annum. Yes - it is expensive but can be advantageous when needed...especially as a dog ages. I've always had my dogs covered due to the risk of snake bite which can run to $6G or more.
