    Adelaide --> Alice --> Brisbane

The seeds of a trip from Adelaide to Alice Springs and then across to Brisbane have been sown.

We (my wife and I and 2-1/2 yo son) have three weeks and are considering going late August/early September, probably camping most of the time but with a few stops in more up-market accommodation.

Will be doing my own research but would be grateful if I could get a realistic idea of expected road types and conditions, weather conditions, accommodation options, and, of course, the viability of doing that trip in that timeframe (hopefully spend a week around the Alice). Info on places to fuel up would be helpful.

Basically, just how "remote" can we expect it to be.

We'll be bringing plenty of water and should have appropriate spares for the vehicle so hopefully no problems on that front.

Experiences and advice from anyone who has done similar trips would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

You could spend 3 weeks in Alice alone - lots to see if you like the desert!! Alice to Brisbane on the bitumen is a 3 day trip if you don't stop to see anything, used to do it all the time when I live there - add a bit if you want to go the Plenty. Fuel will be dear anywhere but if you are not planning to go too far off the beaten track then range won't be an issue.

Put as much time in around the centre as you can - it can be life changing - we'll be back to live there as soon as the kidds are off our hands..

    Forgot to add:

There are few tracks that require more than a ute with some ground clearance and a LSD - with the Xtreme you will cruise. Don't miss the obvious like Palm Valley, Rainbow Valley and the Rock and the not so obvious like Gosse Bluff (Worlds largest comet impact crater - good day combined with Palm Valley). If you can go 500k on a tank you will have no problems - fuel available on all the communities.

Highway is boring I reckon, but I just don't feel comfortable on bitumen either. Port Augusta is fairly ok. They've got a great little museum there that entertained my kids for hours, right near the information centre from memory. I stayed at the pub in the middle of town, basically because the food's great and I can't turn down a decent beer.

I went up the Oodnadatta Track through Maree, William Creek and Oodnadatta obviously. Maree sucked, mainly because the pub owners where bloody rude. William Creek was absolutely brilliant, and Oodnadatta was alright. I then went from Oodnadatta to Coober Pedy where I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Stayed at the underground accommodation for a couple of nights. Played the madatory 9 holes of golf and did the tour around the area whilst I was there. A whole lot of history and most of it quite enjoyable.

Ayers Rock etc - nah skipped that stuff. Wasn't really interested in somewhere I needed permission to photograph and had to pay ridiculous money for visiting and accommodation, as well as putting up with every dog and it's owner tourists!

Mt Dare Homestead/Finke - absolutely brilliant. Nothing better than going that way I reckon.

Alice - make sure you have a look at the motor museum and the train museum - they are located next to each other on the way into town.

Devils Marbles - be there for sunset. Some of the best scenery around.

Tennant Creek - continue on another 10km's and you'll come to Three Ways!

I'ev got a heap of photos and stuff about of this area if you want. Just depends what you want to see and where you want to go.

    Cheers

    C'mon Chris,

Tennant Creek is not the asshole of the world - although I understand that you can see it from there..

I agree, Ayers Rock is a bit dear to do but if you haven't seen it before you've got to do it once. Also agree with Finke/Mt Dare - great area and there is Chambers Pillar to do while you are there.

I am very biased toward the centre - love it..
