Unsafe practice

I was out in the series 111 2.25 diesel today. As she is fitted with an overdrive I was comfortably(

) cruising at 50 mph and she was in fine voice!. In the distance I saw some one walking on the road coming towards me. I indicated and drove around him to the opposite side of the road. Suddenly he gave a startled look. He had on head phones and was only aware of me and the series 111 as I passed him. The series 111 is limestone in colour so clearly visible in the distance and like I said she was in fine voice at 50 mph. Headphones being worn by walkers on roads ought to be banned. They make the person completely oblivious to on comming traffic...even a raucous series111 diesel!

Two teenage girls with their faces buried in their smartphones walked across the road straight in front of my 110 V8 yesterday. Like your vehicle spudfan, my vehicle is hard to miss - I drive everywhere with my headlights on and the V8 sound coming through the straight-through muffler is definitely raucous. As I was hard on the brakes one girl looked up at me momentarily, then looked straight back at her phone. The other girl didn't look up at all. Must have been a good Facebook post I guess.

I definitely agree - headphones and smartphones should not be used near roads!

I wear earphones when walking, I can hear you coming as mine have ambience modes which allow (and amplify) certain frequencies around.

I can hear vehicles approaching from behind etc.

I know what you are saying Tombie, but when I see someone on their phone or wearing headphones near a road I am always going to assume. Similar to the way that I assume a lot of things when i am on the road as part of my defensive driving.

Let Darwin have his way. It's not the activity that is dangerous, it's the person undertaking said activity that is - the gene pool can afford to be cleansed of such individuals - it will make the Human race stronger.

With so many pedestrian safety features on a Series vehicle I'm sure the offender would have been fine if cleaned up at 50MPH...

On my rare trips to part that are civilized I see people drive & riding bikes with headphones on.
Is that even legal?
How do you hear horns, level crossing bells & so on in a closed up, air conditioned car with headphones on & blasting?
Just seems dumb to me, but I do seem to becoming old fashioned with age.
Clearing the gene pool I guess!

BTW Folks who pay big $$ to go to the football (Or any event) then spend the whole time looking at their phones??

Problem is if you were unfortunate enough to hit one the 'paperwork' would be horrendous.

Its so bad, I don't understand how these people can't just not be on phones etc whilst walking? (And driving!)
Is why dash cams are so important these days.
I encounter it in my wheelchair, forever having folks crash in to me as they are on their phones walking. I can go round most of the time, but some im pretty boxed in and even shouting to them, do absorbed in phones thst they don't hear anything. Never even an apology either. At least it's not like crashing into a wheelchair can kill them like a car on the roads

No matter what the circumstances it is the driver who will get the blame. There should be sanctions against people who walk out in dark clothes in the evening where there are no footpaths. There should be sanctions against cyclist wearing headphones too. People need to be aware of their surroundings. If the person with the headphones had walked out in front of me and was killed I would have been in a lot of trouble from the word go and even though it would have been no fault of mine I would have had to live with the consequences.
I was called to jury service a few years ago. It involved the death of a young child and a lorry. It was not the driver's fault as the child ran from behind a wall. It was not a pleasant experience for me and it took a long time for the whole thing to leave my head.
The driver though not at fault still had to be brought through the court system for this verdict to be arrived at, he gave up driving it had that profound effect on him. The mother tried to resusitate the child after the double back wheel of the truck had gone over it. The father was holding the child's hand when it pulled away and ran out from behind the wall. It still crosses my mind now and then and heaven only knows how the parents are doing now, or the driver.
If the headphone brigade realised the consequences that can arise from their actions they might act differently but I doubt it.
