Thread: What 'MY' is a 'New' 2006 Defender?

Question What 'MY' is a 'New' 2006 Defender?

Currently considering whether now is the time to buy a brand new Defender, being the last of breed all Land Rover designed model and engine , or whether to wait until next year when the updated "Land Ford Defender" appears with its new engine. My guess is that as always, there will be a few cost cutting negatives to go with the upgrades.

The question is however, what constitutes a 'new' current model? All new 2006 vehicles I've seen advertised are actually MY2003 which would have been available in around 2002, but the stealers are asking new prices of course, not old stock prices.

How many MY2003 cars do LR have stockpiled? Is there such a thing as a MY2004/5/6? What has changed since MY2003? Would I gain anything by ordering from new stock ex UK?

    Opinions please. Thanks in advance.

They haven't changed the MY03 designation because they say that the car hasn't changed. However, for 05 complianced cars they moved from SA build to UK build. They also lost the bullbar, sidesteps, rear step, and most famously the "xtreme" badge". They gained cd radio and remote central locking.

I have noticed that there are some small differences in my car to the SA built ones. I have no idea whether they are better or not. I was told so at the time though.

    Hi Scouse,

Thanks for the reply. Is that built date on the LR factory plate? (as opposed to the Aust Compliance plate). Have you any idea what the MY is defined as?

    Cheers

Excellent, I'll put mine on the market as an 06 model.
    The Ugly Duckling-
03 Defender Xtreme, now reduced by 30%.

Cool... you just have to get it re-complianced now and you're away

Interestinly mine doesn't have a build date on it anywhere. It has a 05 compliance, but no build date. Since the chassis numbers are printed on various bits I think they have stopped putting that info on a seperate plate.

    Hi Captain,

Thanks for that. I've been told by 3 dealers that the SA build were all sold long since. I'm not certain whether this is true as LR still seem to have a pile of Defenders in Customs Bond somewhere which they are drip feeding to dealers. Brand new Extreme's (with the tubular type sidesteps and badges) are still cropping up.

    Is your car a MY03?

    Cheers

Ours is complianced Jan 05. As I said, I can't find any evidence of when it was built on the car, but I did find some build doco inside the door that says it was built oct 04. It is UK built. A tip is you can tell by the front door frames. The SA ones are square section at the top. UK ones are rounded and pressed.

Defenders don't have build plates (haven't for years). The build date is supplied by LR.

MY is defined as Model Year.
An 06MY could have been built in 2005 though. They usually start just after mid year making the next year MY.
If you check the VIN, you can tell the MY. The 10th digit along is the year (5=2005, 6=2006). This is for 2001 onwards only though, before that they used letters.

Sorry I did not ask my question very well. I meant what MY is the 2006 built car to which you referred?

    To see what confusion is out there, have a look at;
    http://www.carsales.com.au/pls/carsa...ler_new_search

Currently listed are 4 new Defenders advertised as 2006 LANDROVER DEFENDER 110 03MY X-Treme. All VINs are SALLDHM575A***** which makes them 2005 build if the VIN dating system is correct.

We all know that car dealers often don't really know what they are selling and as you said, the VIN should give the game away but I'm asking questions as I'm not so sure. Talk about buyer beware!

Where do we find the correct information? I've asked LRA and did not get much help.
