Yes, counterintuitively if a big quake hits and you're in the subways you're probably better off staying down there, because:
1. the subway exits all narrow down and are serious crush points when 10,000 people try to exit at once;
2. there'd be glass, AC units and all sorts of other stuff crashing to the ground at street level;
3. the deeper you are the less severe the earth movement.
Sounds like the Daibutsu (Big Buddha) at Kamakura that used to have a huge temple around it but which got washed away by a tsunami. And, yeah, it's a long way from the beach.
