In addition to my beloved Defender Td5 - this is one of our other 4WD's, and I love it too. 120kw/400nm in standard form - 7.5L/100km. 100,000km and not one single problem - of any kind. Made in Austria in the Unimog factory. Variable-geometry turbo gets powergoing so early that it spins all 4 wheels out of the driveway and still gets 11L/100km on soft sand. Only problem is it doesn't have the room inside to make it a great tourer. Live axles front and back too.

one day I'm going to get (another) CJ as a project vehicle. (probably not the thing to say on a Landy forum :p)
Dad bought his first Jeep around '72 ( a Wagoneer) and my first car was a CJ6, and later had a J3000 as my work truck. Dear old Dad still can't believe I'm now driving a Landy...:D

The big difference with the modern jeep as against, say, a disco is when you crunch one. I used to visit the Fowles auctions every fortnight and have to say there were a number of jeeps- totalled, that werent badly damaged but were distorted when you examine them. Particularly the model they trashed. Notably the tailgate was the first thing to go in that video, its fibreglass:o

And don't forget the first Jeep was an almost exact copy of the Bantam - far closer than the S1 was to the Jeep.

IIRC, the Bantam was the best of the vehicles tendered, but they had FA manufacturing capacity and it was underpowered, so the contract was awarded to Willys as they had the best engine, etc. I think there were a few different Willys prototypes, then the MA, (very small numbers) then the definitive WWII Jeep was the MB. When Willys ran out of manufacturing capacity Ford started making the GPW which was exactly the same, (supposeedly GPW meant General Purpose-Willys) including the Willys engine (there were a few small detail differences, eg. Ford script on bolt heads, fromt cross member different (one was tubular, the other U section, etc)

Pretty close I think - I seem to have heard that Ford were not amused by being told to make Willys engines. But I believe that Both Ford and Willys were selected from the start - the Willys design having been selected as the best, but it in turn was copied largely from the Bantam as the Army had given one of the Bantams to Willys with instructions to "make yours as good as this". There were several thousand Bantams built, and as these were handed to Britain under lend-lease, they probably were the first Jeeps to see combat (in North Africa). Bantam lost out as you say mainly because they had basically no mass production capability. They were primarily an importer - the Jeep concept started from the Austin Seven they were importing - and they were negotiating with the Checker Cab company to produce Jeeps. This of course fell through when they failed to win a production contract. From the army's point of view, they clearly made the best decision, but it was a bit rough on Bantam, and they seem to have been a bit cavalier about Bantam's intellectual property.

It's a funny thing to see an old Jeep engine go together with a mix of Ford and Willys bits, eg. rods. as they look a little different, but dimensionally are identical.
