One of my favourite sleepers is the Lancia Thema with a Ferrari engine ... Lancia Thema - Wikipedia

    Thema 8·32[edit]

A first series Lancia Thema 8·32

First shown at the Turin Auto Show in 1986, the Lancia Thema 8·32 ("8" standing for the number of cylinders and "32" for the number of valves) was assembled at Lancia's S. Paolo plant in Turin.[15] It used a 2,927 cc, Tipo F105L, Ferrari V8. This engine was based on the unit used in the Ferrari 308 and in the Ferrari Mondial Quattrovalvole, and some of the componentry was assembled by Ducati[16] from castings made at Maranello.

Yes, I'm with you there. Shame what's happened to Lancia. However the 8 32 has a kind of spiritual successor in the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. It also has a Ferrari engine, sort of.

Another Ferrari sleeper (or perhaps strange bird) is the FF or Ferrari Four which is a four seater and four wheel drive but not 4wd as we know it, by driving the front wheels from the front of the engine...Ferrari FF - Wikipedia

This system is based around a second, simple, gearbox (gears and other components built by Carraro Engineering), taking power from the front of the engine. This gearbox (designated "power take off unit", or PTU) has only two forward gears (2nd and 4th) plus reverse (with gear ratios 6% taller than the corresponding ratios in the main gearbox), so the system is only active in 1st to 4th gears. The connection between this gearbox and each front wheel is via independent Haldex-type clutches, without a differential.[18] Due to the difference in ratios "the clutches continually slip"[19] and only transmit, at most, 20% of the engine's torque.

It was, and still is, an extraordinary vehicle. But, insane or not, it worked. Insane?? Of course. Who else but Ferrari would mate such a system to a front engined V12 executive express? The thing was nuts. But did I say it worked.. However, I'll bet Ferrari mechanics had nightmares when one came in. All genius has an element of lunacy..., or should that be the other way around?

Nice little hat tip at the end.
