    Cross City Tunnel Warning!

Just got the latest bill from the RTA

The one & only time I've been through that damn tunnel cost $9

Nothing we can do it seems. The operators deem a Defender to be a truck - over 2m high.

    Never again.

Haven't been on Laurie Brereton's Monorail on principle either.

    Be Warned!

    Regards

Yeah we get the same thing with the Disco but only when we have the trailer (single axle) we had to ring them to get them to adjust it, they do it automaticly now it comes up with $7.50 at the toll gate but now when we get the bill it's changed to $3.30.

Strange it doesn't do it when we don't have the trailer on cause our Disco is a tad over 2 metres tall with the racks on.

    Was that the tunnel only

Max - have to attempted to qustion them directly over this? An everyday station wagon with a full roofrack on can approach 2m without difficulty. Is teir any recourse, or do they just flatly deny you an argument?

    Hi Omaroo

The Tunnel system apparently matches the tag, the rego & their database of vehicle types. A Defender is a truck under their rules. And thats that. Nothing to do with the RTA, who sound as though they're sick of the phone calls.

Whats interesting is the rego part - they must photograph everything going in. Our tag has three regos hooked up to it, I wonder how the cars would go. Not going to find out though.

Max - just out of interest, on your rego papers - what's your body code? Is it PVF? If it is, it's classed by the RTA as a "Wagon" and cannot be confused with a truck. I don't have my Defender's papers with me, but I do my Jeep's. They state "PVF" for a Grand Cherokee - which is considered just that by the tunnel people.

    NSW Body Shape
    • Coupe (Cou) is a vehicle that has 2 doors and 2 seating positions only.
    • Sedan (Sed) is to be used for vehicles having 2/3/4/5 doors and 4 or more seating positions.
    • Van (Van) is for vehicles, which have a separate Van body, built on a Cab/chassis.
    • (PVN), (PVS), and (PVW) is for vehicles which have a walk through body.
    • (PVF) is to be used for MC category vehicles, and for MC category vehicle which are also certified as NA category, and have a body style of wagon.
    • Utility (Ute) is to be used for utilities, which may have a Regular cab, Super Cab, Extra cab
    etc.
    • For MA and MB category vehicles which have a body style of Wagon and seat up to 8
occupants will have a NSW body shape of (Wag) provided they meet the NSW station
wagon requirements as shown in section 5 of the SUTI manual (Circular 0-14-4).

Further enquires would have us believe that the truck status is based on the height of the vehicle. It seems theres a sensor at the tollgate entrance. And I have a 3" lift, & sometimes 35" tyres, although not normally around the city.

I wonder if aerials break the beam?

I hired a Commodore (POS) (got upgraded from a corolla ) when down there for the NRL final in October.

When we were picking the car up at the airport, some "Seppo" was going off her brain, as she had been thru the tunnel heaps and they had the bill waiting for her, when she came back with the rental!!

They said sometimes they dont ping you from interstate or if its a rental they send a warning letter. They had brochures e'where telling you to buy an etag or whatever.
We didnt, went thru it about 10 times, and have never heard anything back since
