Question Mozzie/Midge Repellents - What do people recommend?

For some reason now I've been out twice camping & exploring, etc and been hit by midges where by in the days following I have really bad reactions to the midge bites, so I'm seeking out what is on the market to help protect you against Midges &/or Mozzies and any other annoying bugs?

What do people recommend and have success with?
    Are these products pet friendly?
What other methods do people use to ward off the dreaded Midge/mozzie?

    thanks in advance....

Eat lots of vegimite, apparently mozzies and midgies don’t like the vitamin B

    has never worked for me

a mix of isopropyl alcohol, a few drops of peppermint oil, cinnamon oil, lavender and rosemary oils worked best for me when i was right into fishing etc

these days i'm lazy and usually use bushmans and a coil or two

    Still working for me
I bulk up my toast a couple of weeks before going camping, the missus reckons she can smell it coming out in my sweat

Didn’t work at Drakesbrook Weir this year, nothing did
I had to put on the bushmans, and they were still landing and biting where I had applied the bushmans ☹️

Cant help with a repellant - good old Aeroguard works for me - but the red lump/itch as a result of histamines in your body going to the bite area to deal with the bite. If you start taking hay fever tablets (Anti-histamines) before you head out and keep taking them while out, it will not stop the bites but the reaction to them will be minimised.

I find the 24hour versions taken twice daily work wonders.

    +1

Try not to camp where the midgies/mosquitos are (mudflats, sandflats, creeks, dams, mangroves or prtetty much any water source) .
Mozzie coils are cheap and effective and lighting up 2 or 3 of them before first light and before last light when they are most active seems to do the trick.
Bushmans works well but dont touch anything plastic or painted if your fingers are covered in the stuff because you will melt it, I have buggered up quite a few hard bodied lures over the years with bushman fingers.

it may sound silly but long sleeved shirts, trakkies and sox are my first line of defence against sandflies when fishing creeks

As Inc said , make your own , I do. You normally have all recommended ingredients home.

No idea about all the other little buggers but Mozzies which do give warning of their approach simply need an extremely fast open palm & for that you do need excellent reflexes.
This method does risk the dreaded Cauiliflower Ears from the incessant bashing of same, but hey, you are "enjoying" the great Aussie outdoors so you can't have it both ways. Sleep or Cauliflower Ears?

    Your choice.

I just take my wife along and they leave me alone. She could be 50M away locked in the van and the mozzies would all be over there banging at the wall to get in.

You will be giving Spud bad ideas.

Though no doubt, he has thought that one through.
