Things can always be worse...
Some years ago we had an underfloor leak in the sitting room and to put it mildly things were a mess. There was a lot of digging involved as the water was travelling along the outside of the pipes and it involved a lot of digging up to find the source of the leak. Anyway we got it sorted. Insurance companies being what they are, our insurance company said as the house was not insured for the correct amount they were deducting the same percentage from the payout. If the house had been over insured I am sure they would only have paid out on their perceived value if something major had happened. Anyway we got the floor fixed, new carpet fitted and the walls repainted as the damp had gone on the walls. Annoying and inconvenient at the time but we got through it.
I was showing my older daughter how to start a fire using flint, steel and tinder in the back garden one day as we used to go camping. My younger daughter who has special was also there watching the demonstration. That Saturday morning I was lying in bed talking to the Mrs and I got a faint burning smell so I went up to investigate. There in the middle of the sitting room floor sitting on the new carpet was our young daughter. She had some tissue on the carpet in front of her and she was trying to get them to light with some matches. As the tissues burnt quickly the issue was soon resolved. Because the carpet was new it was flame resistant which is what saved us from a major catastrophy. It only got singed. My daughter had remembered the flint/steel/tinder demonstration and decided to have a go.
If we had not had the annoying inconvenient leak which involved a change of carpet things would have been so much worse...... Anyway we just changed the carpet ourselves and explained to my daughter that it was not a good idea to do that indoors! We were shaken for a while but we got over it and got on with things. Like my wife says "It could have been worse..."
