Medicinal Hemp

Unusual I know, but this time I am serious.
An elderly friend has chronic and debilitating pain , caused mainly ,’I think ‘ from an old back and spine injury.
The local medicos just up the generic pain relief , of which some have side effects .

So the serious question is , Is medicinal hemp a viable alternative ?

I have a mate with chronic back pain who got the "full fat" tablets inclusive of THC (which meant he couldn't drive for 3 months) but a course of that significantly re-set his pain system and dropped his dependence on opiates. He managed to get it prescribed through the health system, so it was completely legit.

When my little guy was bad, we also tried some oil we obtained from the East but by the time it arrived whether or not it helped is inconclusive. I know a number of people who've given it to terminal kids who swear it helped.

My wife started on Medical Cannabis couple of months ago for depression & anxiety as some of the medications she was on are extremely additive & cause people to just stop breathing in there sleep. These medications were no longer being of an benefited to her so they are slowly weening her off them & increasing the Cannabis oil. I have noticed it has relaxed her a little even though they have decreased the other medication by 50%. She has also had back pain for many years , I have found she does not complain as much about her back these days. The biggest problem we have is that her doctor referred her to a company in Sydney instead of in Brisbane so all contacts are by phone & we can never get through to them & it can take up to 24hrs for them to get back us . Also they only deal with two Chemist outlets & neither of them are of them are in Brisbane , one 1 1/2hrs away & the other 2hrs . The 1st one they sent the script I was unable to contact them at all & leaving messages fell on deaf ears , The script was then sent to the second Chemist who answer the phone 99% of the time & call back within a couple minutes , It takes around 3 days from when placing an order to when we receive it .

Our local Chemist gave us the name of a doctor who specializes in Cannabis Oil who who is local who we went to see but the way the Government has set it up we are locked into the the doctors in Sydney for two years & after that time we will be able to change to the local doctor. When we need advice on the product we ask our local Chemist.

One of the down sides is if you are taking it & have a car accident it could affect your insurance which my wife has not driven for 3+ years any way.

The main problem with Medical Cannabis is that while it has been approved for use by the medical authorities as yet it is not listed on the PBS - so no $41 per script - news reports indicate it can cost quite a few hundred $$$ to get a script filled. Many people on concessions so only pay just over $6 a script cannot afford the medical price so get supplies from their local drug dealer - though we can grown our own in the ACT as long as you dont work for the Commonwealth where it is still an offence.

In my experience you need to know what type you are using and how to consume it etc. Depending on the strain of the hemp you can get different results.

If you have a indica you get "stoned" effectively ie relaxed and is more of a body thing and If you have a sativa you get "high" ie uplifted and is more of a head thing. I have not experience with oils but the reason there are oils is that THC does not bind to water (so you can't pull a cup of teafrom the stuff) but you need to bind it to a fat. That's why edibles are basically always cookies since you grind the hemp up into small particles and let them soak in warm butter, which you use in your recipe to bake cookies.

Also, temperature is a determining factor in the release of the THC. This goes for both smoking, vaping and baking cookies (all of which is of course theoretical since you can't get THC other than prescribed I am assuming?)

In any case, if you want "both" there are hybrid strains available.

Regarding the consumption method: Inhaling THC gives an almost immediate effect which lasts a varying amount of time. Eating THC takes an hour most of the time to get through your digestive system. The first method is much easier to dose and to "get right" whereas the second method is much more difficult since it takes so long for it to take effect, it might take a lot of experimentation to find your correct dosage. Also, not every edible is equal because of the before mentioned factors.

In the end, hemp is like any other substance, be it alcohol, pills or whatever; you do get used to it so upping the dosage might be needed in the end, especially if you are going for the mind effects. The body effects though do not alter a lot.

Personally I have always preferred natural methods to chemical pills but your mileage may vary. In the end for terminal patients it works quite well since they, forgive my bluntness, do not have the time left in life to get hooked and build up resistance to THC so it is "prefect" for lack of a better word. For daily use I would suggest that it could still be better than the normal pain killers but it does have side effects

Cheers,
-P

My wife takes one type twice a day 6hr's or more apart & a second type just before she goes to bed around 9.30 - 10pm. about a month ago they increased each daily dose from 1 to 2ml & 2 weeks ago they increased the night time one from 1 to 2ml . A nurse rings every 2 weeks to see how she is going & the doctor rings about 1once per month .

It is not much more expensive than the other medication which they are trying to wean her off because it is highly additive & cause her to just stop breathing in her sleep. We have been advised that we may be able to claim on out private health insurance depending on what level we have . Have yet to test this though'
