You have to be careful when building power stations to meet needs of a big customer. There was a smelter in Wales which needed more reliable power to expand. Demand was enough for the business case to pass and so the power station was built.

As the anchor customer the smelter was able to negotiate a very good price based on a long term contract. After many years in the courts it was decided this was state aid and so they had to change to the same price as other customers. Soon after they closed as could no longer complete with imports.

Some would say you can still buy the product as an import forgetting that you are now competing with a larger number of companies for build slots and have to order 6 to 9 months in advance. Local product was available with a months notice which made manufacturers more competitive and able to quickly respond to changes on demand.

After a few years derelict has been demolished and replaced with a wave pool for teaching people to surf

Vic elec users still subsidise the price of the line and energy consumption at an undisclosed rate. The smelter employs 600 people.

Maybe there is a strategic reason for keeping the smelter going............dunno.

And, in the long term, it's cheaper to transport electrons on a return journey than it is to pay a one way fare for moving that horrid excuse for real coal they use down that way!

This is interesting, looks like just another Tax, to make some get a warm and fuzzy feeling that they are helping save the world.

by 2035 , all that stuff will change, a lot of us here will be pushing up daisies , the millenials will be taking control of everything sensibly, we will have have had possibly 3 changes of government with the ensuing changes in legislations , most nations will have recognised climate change and acted upon it , scientists/engineers will have sourced whatever the new clean fuels are to be , we will still be exporting our gas , so don't be concerned about silly current rules on the future of our beloved long range ice engined 4x4s, btw , we still won't have our submarines.

I could go on but thats enough....Gina and Twiggy and that other jeans and t shirt billionaire whats his name ....not to forget Clive will see that Australia's wealth is all ok.

the new defender may even be built.

This may be more relevant to Australian issues, than suburban buzz-boxes are.
