There are plenty of non-political people of integrity around who could perform a largely ceremonial role, but be able to intervene to ensure fresh elections were held if the parliament became unworkable, I think.

I'm not so sure, as I reckon the current G-G has some serious questions to answer about swearing people in to secret ministries and the former G-G should/'ve be/been asked about what they knew about the SAS Regiment's conduct in operations overseas.
