Gone Missing

It's a shame if that's true. I use FB for some interests, such as Vintage HiFi, or elderly Fiats, as there is little else online for those apart from dry, crotchety little groups poked away in obscure parts of the internet. They seem not to want to be found. Those interests thrive on FB. I also visit the AULRO page. It is absolutely nothing like here. There is no continuity, nobody remembers one another for periods of seemingly more than a week or two, and you can forget searching for answers to questions already asked, or references to old threads, because there are no threads, and FB is basically non-searchable in any meaningful way. And the android that runs meta seems determined to make it worse in an attempt to compete with a clock noise.

Have to agree though, Marketplace will be the end of Gumtree unless Gumtree can reinvent itself. I regularly got such meaningless results there ( looking for a trailer, why would I want to buy a door for a Camry instead? In Perth? ) that I no longer bother. I don't think eBay can be bothered with it either, and only run it to be seen to be competing with Marketplace. As for Marketplace, I recently advertised an old Ford that I had that attracted no interest until someone suggested FB. It was sold in 2 hours and the buyer came from Wallan that night to pick it up, so i guess you are right, FB dominates the SH goods domain that eBay move out of.

When I see questions asked on the AULRO FB page, I will often refer the asker to here. So many of them have no idea this place exists, because they think everything is FB, Twitter, and now TikTok. They rarely get answers to their questions that aren't drowned in the morass of negative commentary or suggestions to buy something else, or something far more crude. I hope that some listen to me, and pop in here for a look.

As an aside to what I wrote: I was chatting to a bloke who is doing a project vehicle. Not saying what to protect his privacy. He stopped posting on FB because of all the armchair critics ( Yanks used to call them "sidewalk superintendents" ) telling him what he was doing wrong. None of them were going to do it themselves but knew better than he did. Now, I know there is some of that here, and I've probably been guilty of it myself, but it seems that either that behaviour gets called out or ignored, and lessons are learnt. Also, the Moderators (:bat::censored:) keep things civil, something completely lacking on FB.

A long time ago Wrinklearthur moved to Facebook and so did Chazza, they were both quite active in the Series section.
Chazza now runs a company producing Series Land Rover parts and operates exclusively on Facebook. He did have a website but shut this down as all his work was coming through Facebook.

I get one of my boys to advertise items for sale on Facebook and apart from the odd person messing me around parts have sold fairly quickly.

Gumtree is going the same way, few Series Land Rovers or parts are advertised. I have managed to sell some items but I don't think people browse Gumtree because they are too busy on Facebook.

It doesn't seem to be age related, it's just that for a large percentage of the population Facebook consumes their life.

This I see to be a sad fact of life. I reckon that social media and face book are the scourge of the 21st century. I hate facebook and refuse to have anything to do with it.
I know some will probably say that I will miss out on a lot of stuff, well so be it.

Back on topic. It has been mentioned that some people have moved on for different reasons, no longer owning a LR product etc.

I, like most people who came here did so because we own, or did own a LR. Having done so, I have made a lot of friends through this place and I would regularly come here for more than just LR advice.

Apart from the friends that I have made and met, the regulars that lived in remote areas and interstate that I never met, felt like a pen pal, that I may get to meet one day.

Then there was the time one would be on a holiday interstate and would advertise wishing to meet and greet a few Aulroians. There would be a plethora of offers.

I know that there used to be one in Melbourne where a group would go to table 8 at pub, with a saying that what happens at table 8 stays at table 8.

Sadly, none of this seems to happen any more.

Up until 'rona killed it, the Winter Wombat was something of an institution for the Melbourne mob. It got a guernsey again in 2022 and so few bothered to turn up it was pretty much a non event. Sad, it used to be a great weekend.

AULRO is a sort of social outlet for me. Yes a kind of "Pen Pal" thing.
Maybe because I live remote &/or alone.

I haven't yet done a winter Wombat and was planning to do it last year.

Unfortunately it coincided with a weekend that my son, who lives in the USA, came home for business and could only make it to Brisbane.

Having not seen him for a while, a trip to Brisbane took precedence over Winter Wombat.

I know that many people hope he fails, but to me Musk's ongoing exposure of the corrupt shenanigans previously at Tweety is shining a light at all of their darkness. Just his blocking of the pedo posts is worth the $40 odd billion IMO. Does anyone think Tweety was alone in manipulating content?
