We very seldom buy F&V from the big supermarkets. They are too expensive by far.
Instead we prefer to go to the small operators at the roadside. They have the good, tasty, fresh lines.
Sometimes we buy from the suburban F&V specialists, but they can be a bit pricey too.
Kiwi Fruit, bananas, grapes, cherries, oranges, peaches, nectarines and sometimes rock-melon, are our regulars.
Pears, apples, avocado are now on the do-not-buy list due to health probs.
Pineapple and mangoes are difficult to find for a good price here.

If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
If it is not in season (and even then there is no guarantee) it will have been stored frozen. This impacted on ripening and how long it will last

Often tomatoes are picked green. They then go into a special climate controlled room to make them red.
This is known in the industry as gassing them. They then become red in color, but are still not ripe inside.
I live in thr heart of a massive fruit growing region which includes tomatoes
Apples and some other fruit can survive for more than a year in specially climate controlled cool stores.
These can be ok but never as good as fresh.
The company I work for are the biggest apple and pear growers in Australia.
If you buy apples and pears from Aldi, Coles and Woolies in Melb, Sydney and Brisbane there is a fair chance that it is from our company and I might have delivered it.
Needless to say, I never need to buy apples.
