I hate answering machines, but when my wife was ill I got one to screen calls. It was so effective at deterring the scamsters and the awful sales pitches that I kept it. Bit of a PITA deleting all the "engaged tones", but better than answering the calls. Now, after an idiotic failure of my ISP ( ex ) and the NBN I no longer have a landline, which brings some relief. Now I just have to delete the 60 or so emails that populate my junk folder each day. That's easy, except I need to scan it quickly in case there's one in there I want.
One thing I will say in their defence: I no longer have to deal with the hundreds of bloody pamphlets that used to get shoved into my letterbox.
