7 years around Africa in my Defender - travel with me on YT

    Hi all,

I thought maybe some of you will be interested in my channel below - I bought a 1991 110 back in 2000 and spent quite a few years rebuilding her into an African ready 200TDI before heading off into Africa on various trips, visiting almost every country including the likes of Somalia. The longest trip was 3 years to 45 countries, down the west coast and up the east coast.

Mods include a rebuilt 200TDI, stubby R380, 2006 front axle, 1998 rear axle, full sized intercooler and Ali rad, dual Koni shocks, 130 helper springs in the rear, 90 tank added under the drivers seat, rear wing fuel and water tanks and a C-Tek battery system with dual Optima yellow tops.

Back in 2020 as the pandemic was looming I jumped on what proved to be the last flight into Namibia with some film gear and spent a year there learning to film in the desert/bush. I've since spent another 6 months in Southern Africa and altogether have filmed 9 long series, a mixture of adventure and wildlife, which I have started the process of editing. Series 1 is setting the screen so to speak, a bit about me, and the decision to go to Namibia where I was almost the only tourist in the country for a year.

I'm still very much learning how to edit, but hopefully some of you enjoy my progress so far. Please do share them if you do, I'm not great at self promotion ;-)

Best to watch in numeric order from 1 to 6 so the story makes sense:

I'll definitely have a look. I'd love to go to Africa.

Video editing, which software suite do you use?

    Thanks mate!

I use Final Cut Pro by Apple. It's rock solid, quite fun to use after the normal learning curve at the beginning, and only ever the up front cost. I paid about $500 for it 8 years ago and its been free upgrades to every new version ever since...

Here's my intro video to get people started...

FCP is still $500... I'm just playing so I can't justify that outlay, but I find Da Vinci Resolve's free suite is amazing. It now has an iPad version. I've never understood, with iPad Pro now having the Mx chips why there isn't an iPadOS version of FCP. It has to come, surely. If I ever get serious though it'll be FCP. If it's good enough for Marques Brownlee ( and you ) it's good enough for me...

BTW, I really like the vids I've watched so far and I am your newest sub...

Note to self; always use the back of the hand test when showering in Tanzania!

Will definately be following your series.
I did an 8 week trip through Sth Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Kenya 10 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Africa is a wonderful country and would love to return but although SWMBO also loved it, she has other countries in mind at present.
Closest we'll get to returning is that we now have some wonderful Sth African neighbours!

I did almost the same trip but got malaria in Zimbabwe so that cut short our trip into Namibia, 2 months in SA was great though.

Thanks guys. It's a bit of a lonely business filming and editing these, so its nice to get some feedback when people appreciate them ;-)

@Tins I believe Da Vinci has a very steep learning curve - its ultra Pro software but I'm sure your smart enough to figure it all out!

@loanrangie & @Xtreme thanks for sharing your adventures - hopefully you both get back and you bump into a Kiwi green Landy whilst your there :-)

Btw, I'm looking to move to Oz in the next year or two, just got to figure out the sweet spot hot weather wise...

Here's the 2nd and 3rd episodes for those new to the thread...

Great stuff mate Keep em coming!

As I was watching along just now, I got this feeling I knew about you already somehow. As an aspiring overlander for, oh, 20 odd years I have seen quite a lot stuff. Didn't you used to have a website? Not that you used it much but you did re-do it a couple of times.

Anyway, I liked your videos so far, I do not mind the learning on the job vibe I get from it at all. The only thing I am wondering about is your release schedule. You did post some shots with links to "series" which to me suggests that you are going to release quite a bit but with the first of 6 video's posted 1 year (or more since youtube seems to calculate 1 including how many days until it rolls over to two years) ago, what are your plans? I realize you are not a pro so I'll take what I can get but I was just wondering.

    Cheers,
    -P

Much as it pains me to say it, but WA would be a good place to look if you like Africa. The wildlife ( people too) is pretty tame but there's a heck of a lot to see and the climate seems similar to southern Africa. Another lover of Africa, ASPW, moved to Perth a while back.

BTW, I enjoy your videos far more than his, so, as prelude says, keep 'em coming.

PS. Yes! Resolve is definitely not plug and play. If FCP is simpler to learn then I'll consider it. Maybe switch to iMovie in the short term, as it's  and free. Resolve is very powerfull but quite daunting for the casual user. Thanks for the info.

@prelude - Yes, I've been dabbling for quite a well, I made a Morocco DVD back in 2005, contributed to the first edition of Overlanders Handbook, over 1,000 posts on horizonsunlimited.com before the likes of social media arrived etc - but like most people travel has to take a back seat to earning money to stay alive :-)

I have 25 Terrabytes of 4K footage filmed - all filmed with an interesting location, journey or story in mind, so I can easily make 100 episodes from it, for example I lived in Etosha National Park alone for 4 months during lockdown, just me and the animals and a few park staff. I think people would find that quite interesting. I'll make a video about everything I have filmed soon to give people a heads up... I have a huge number of hard drives :-)

However editing takes 20 times longer than filming does, I started off, then life got in the way, and now have some free time again - free as in I'm choosing not to work to try and get things off the ground on the channel. However I seem(?) to have peeved the YT algorithm as I ran some google ads at the start, but when I changed the charging currency on my account, they banned me for life for being fraudulent!
Then they banned the first two episodes as it went against their covid policy, people might find them upsetting was my best guess as to why from their bs policy(!?), reinstated on appeal, but I worry that my account is on some kind of 'deamplify' or shadow banned kind of setting... its not for the majority of people for sure, but I'm trying to make it good quality and interesting... or maybe my content is rubbish and I should take take ladies in bikinis with me next time and produce light hearted junk....?

FYI - so far this is a bit of an 'Intro' series to me, my travels, the Landy (owned her for 23 years), how I ended up locked down for a year in Namibia etc. Soon it's more pure travel and wildlife adventures

@tins - Yeah, I'm looking at WA, NT or northern Queensland at this stage. A quiet piece of land with a view, a huge shed and a Starlink dish for internet are my 3 main requirements ;-)I suppose I had better find an old Defender to do up as well!

Here's 4 and 5 for those new to the thread:
