    4wd jacks

    Hi guys,

I have an old Range Rover classic. I had two jacks here, the one originally in the car "stuck" on the 2nd stage and I didn't think anything of it at the time. It "exploded" and split down the length of the cylinder as I kept jacking..... its actually really dangerous. Now the 2nd jack that lives in the car is doing the same thing, it "stops" at the 1st stage and wedges solidly.

what are others doing for a jack?

    seeya,
    Shane L.

Discovery 1 with factory jack. The factory jack that came with the car didn't work, so I swapped it with the jack from the other car. I can't remember what failed, but I still have it so I can check.

I've found a few Japanese 4WD screw jacks at Trash & Treasure markets, usually missing the handle but you can improvise...

Are those screw type jacks easy to use? .... or do they want to spin and flip over until they are held in place by the car .....

If the Disco 1 has a 2 stage hydraulic jack, that is probably a good way to find another one (I don't think I've ever seen a 2 stage hydraulic jack for sale).

I use a 6 ton two stage jack on my FC. The sidewalls are so tall (255-100-16 ) that a single stage cant get them high enough when flat, to get the wheel off.

The screw jacks are easy to use, if lubricated they don't want to spin & flip over. I use a handle from a scissor jack or even a screwdriver (making sure I'm not underneath the vehicle).
With a couple that are riveted together I've drilled a hole to get some liquid grease inside.

Two stage and, depending on the vehicle it came from, can be rated up to about 2 tonne.
Can be used at any angle (I've used them to adjust axle position when re-fitting leaf springs) and don't leak !

When buying the Father-in-law taught me to put some weight on them (one hand) while adjusting with the other hand. That way you can check it's not missing any teeth !

I was going to weld a U-shaped piece of steel on the top to go under a Series Land Rover axle. Instead I made a hardwood block that sits between the ends of the spring U-bolts and has a recess for the end of the jack.

Most of the cheap hydraulic bottle jacks are two stage problem is that they leak unless stored upright.
EDIT : Just thought about the above comment, they are not two stage but have a screw out first stage.

I have one that doesn't seem to have any rating on it and the wrecker wasn't sure if it came out of a Hilux or Cruiser, I wonder if there is any other way of telling?

If you post or send a picture I'll see if it looks similar to any of mine that still have the rating sticker.

The ones I have are from Nissan's, Toyota's & Daihatsu's. They turn up at the local Trash & Treasure now and again, best was $3.50 and the most expensive was $10.
I need to stop collecting them as I have more jacks than vehicles, or maybe I need more vehicles to go with the jacks ?
