    Ha!

Didn’t have grid paper but I think I’ve kind of done it the same way; your way is better.
How do I ensure the arc is the same as the shape I’m copying/reducing?

I just estimated my radius. I got close enough first time to then be able to fine tune if I needed to. To change the shape of the arc or semi-circle of each side, you lengthen or shorten your radius. I would shorten my radius to get a closer match based on the way the picture overlay fits. I used Microsoft Word drawing tool to create the drawing and just copied your picture into the drawing and scaled it to fit the shape I had to see how close it was. My post was really just about the method of getting the shape using circles (by compass) rather than the accurate scale.

If using a compass onto paper, trial and error to get the scaling right. That online graph paper would be useful but you can also still buy high resolution graph paper at stationary shops if you are using an old school compass.

Those horizontal and vertical lines in my drawing are my centre lines for the circels I drew so I could line them up with the rotated square I started with. Just in case you thought they were graph paper.

While computer and a photo would could make it easy, old school types might remember a cool school, art toy called a "Sketch-A-Graph" or Etch-A Sketch

Its $12 or check out some charity shops. I saw one a few months ago for $1 in the rotary rummage op hop near me.

A lead pencil rub using transparent paper might work for less. Graphite not lead of course
