Going out blind, always, although these days so many people have earbud things in I'm not sure how much use it is. I always go out slow enough to stop if needed. When it comes to hitting pedestrians and the like, once isn't enough, it's too many.
This is what I meant by bitter experience. I nearly killed a cyclist once. The fact that I was driving along the road and he came out from between parked cars into my path in no way diminished the total anguish I felt. It's something to be avoided if possible, and in so many cases it IS possible.
