Pink Floyd Test for new Stereo

    Hello All,

Can anyone remember the name of the Pink Floyd song that starts with the sound of a person walking from the left-hand side of the room to the right hand side? . It was great to listen to back in the 1970-80s in a dark room with a set of good quality headphones on. You could trace the person's progress across the room.

I just hooked up my computer's new sound sound system and I would like to stretch its stereophonic legs a bit.

I am not sure whether it is the same Pink Floyd song where someone is eating cereal too - before the song 'properly' starts.

Any other good suggestions of clever rock songs with good stereo-phonics in then?

    Kind regards
    Lionel

I know the Pink Floyd song you mean but cannot remember the title

Us Linn Audiophile's use Clare Martin's Black Coffee to set up a stage , it's a great recording so might be worth a try, if not it's a great song

The double album UMMA GUMMA has the following track
"Grantchester Meadows" which ends with someone chasing a fly. I think that is the one you want.

    G'day Jerry,

Yes - I know that story ... I remember the song too - just not the title. Then the next issue is that the technique was only used on album versions. Not some of the live concerts that have been copied lots of times on Youtube. So it could be that my online search found the right song - just not the right version. I might have to dig out the external CD play and find out where my Pink Floyd CDs have been stored away.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

    Hello Windsock,

On the run is very close. It has the track of something like a train announcement and then sounds of someone running along a platform. Close - but not right on the money. Still a very good workout of the stereo system though.

Gee, having to listen to Pink Floyd songs to find the right track - I suppose someone has to do it! I am working remotely from home and have a lot of administration and data entry to do to update the system today. At least I will have a good sound-scape happening to help me with the mind-numbing data entry. I have been doing it since last Wednesday - sigh!

    Kind regards

I think what you are looking for is called Footsteps/Doors ( The Journey). Hard to find except live. The best one is Amsterdam, 1969. Music has it. Can't speak for the other streamers. Would be rare on CD, even rarer these days on vinyl.

    Hello All,

In the absence of finding 'that' Pink Floyd song - I thought what other song could I play to fully stretch the new sound system?

Oh that is right the first track off Al Di Meola's album the Splendido Hotel which is Alien Chase On Arabian Desert. Accessed 15th of March 2023 from SPLENDIDO HOTEL Al Di Meola Vinyl HQ Sound Full Album - YouTube.... Yep - that worked!

    Kind regards

It's listed as track #73 on The Early Years if you have that.

Out of left field, I know, but if you want to check the soundstage then Enya's Orinoco Flow does a good job. I have a pair of Tannoy HPD 385 15" speakers driven by a Sansui AU555a amp, and that song is amazing. ( To be fair, he Tannoys could make Norman Gunston sound good )

Al De Miola is a little to technically "perfect" for me, but yes, that would do it.

The Beatles loved to play with stereo as well. The double LP The Beatles, aka The White Album, was released in mono and stereo versions and they were different. On other stuff they played with having very seperate vocals and guitars etc.
