Thank you for sharing your detailed insight into things Land Rover and diagnostics. It took me a couple of attempts to fully read it. The comprehension part of understanding what I actually read is slowly catching up! Thanks again for spending the time to write and post such a thorough reply.

EDC is what Bosch call their diesel engine control units, I don't think they would have called the EGR control that, but I stand to be corrected.
I think a few P38's had them (EDC units) overseas, and possibly the straight 6 diesel in the early L322's worldwide (BMW).

I don't think we got the EGR version of the Tdi here either.
I dunno, but mine is a '99, and other than the hallmarks of a rebuild due to various telltales obvious around the engine bay ... I'm 99% convinced it's fairly original(other then my mods now).
It didn't have a EGR on it, and being a 99 model(compliance date is 4/99, but build/VIN number relate to a '98 build year).
300tdi has a mechanical injector pump. It will run fine with no battery in the car once you have push started it. There are various little black boxes that control things like the airbag, air conditioner, central locking and front windows, but the car is still drivable if they fail.

RRC 3.9s in the USA from about 89 onwards had a diagnostic display under the seat which would give some diagnostics but only with the engine running as the 14CUX had no fault memory.
I bought one from a USA wrecker but the OZ car had no plug for it, although I rigged up a connection.
It would tell you if the MAF was disconnected etc but not much use really.

Actually the end of '98 for the 300Tdi in Australia, (some first registered in '99) but much, much later in ROW markets, eg. Africa when the TD5 was released and right up to the last of the UK MOD Wolfs, whenever that was.Quote:
