Back then they probably didn't have the supplies or spare troops to maintain prisoners (Guards) as it would have been a lot more than just one as that Campaign progressed.

I doubt that the Japanese would have reciprocated from what I have read & history shows..

That sounds like the pathetic excuses made on another forum I visit in regards to a fail old lady being tasered and it being a split second decision , trained professionals come to mind

Edit: Nor I have ever encountered a mentally unstable person wielding a large knife.

Seeing this from afar and only have limited information. What I see is a bigger problem for the army. Looks like there have been too many big egos that all thought they were top dog resulting in back stabbing all round. This is just the tip of it all. The biggest failure is that the command structure has failed to identify, manage and contain this

Personally I am glad this situation wasn't "contained" if it had been little or no accountability would be had and as far as "wielding a large knife" at 45kg and unable to support her own weight without a walking frame that requires both hands to use and move with I have my doubts a young healthy police officer was in much if any danger.
I will leave my opinions at that and bow out of this conversation
