Lucky, Dave. As others have said, coulda been a whole lot worse.

As for the cause, it's all pure speculation. Sure, could have been texting. On that stretch of Sesame Street he could just as easily have fallen asleep.

Someone up stairs does not want me in Sydney. I should be now sleeping in my truck, somewhere between Sydney and Yass on my way home.

I am however, sitting at home with my trailer parked at the scene of my recent crash.

About 40 kays earlier I passed a slower truck (doesn't happen often as I reckon mine fully loaded is the slowest)

I get a call up on the UHF to tell me this.

    20230704_214919 - Copy.jpg

I didn't feel it happen and have no idea when it happened. It is the front left on the A trailer.

Just very lucky that it didn't happen going through Albury, as I generally pass a lot of local slower cars and I would hate to think what could have been had these wheels hit one.

There is a youtube of a car rolling after an SUV wheel hit a smaller vehicle.

Tire pops off truck, flips car on California freeway - YouTube

So as it could not get repaired until today I was sent home bobtail. Being uninjured this time, I will head off this arvo to pick up trailers and deliver freight, albeit a day late.

They say always happen in three's. I hope the next one is minor. Not that I am in any way superstitious, so not worried.

EDIT. Just after posting this I got a call from work with an update and to confirm my pay. They are going to pay me for half a Sydney trip plus the full trip when it is completed, which I would have expected.

On top of that, which I certainly didn't expect, they are going to pay me for a couple of hours for time spent working out a solution before they sent me home.

This I did not expect and would not have complained about, as it is generally expected as part of the job.

For those not familiar with interstate transport, 99.9% of pay is known as trip money. You get paid by the Km, not taken from speedo but city/town to destination city.

In my case, Shepparton to Sydney. Any running around, hold ups etc is basically unpaid work. The company I work for is very good that they pay for drops, some do a lot don't

In the case of this run I have two drops at market and one at Coles so I get an extra $60 x 3 in my pay.

So when they also said that I will get a couple of hours ($35 an hour is our rate when doing local work on an hourly rate) reinforced my reasons for staying with this mob.

From my perspective, and unbeknown to them, they benefit in the long run. My work moral is high(because of these little things they do) I will go the extra mile.

Whilst typing this I just received a phone call from the mechanic on his way to fix it.

He saw a blown tyre on a rim which he thinks was an inner tyre, near Tarcutta, so the other rim would be somewhere before this.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Good try Dave, but not good enough for a red truck yet.

Hopefully that is the end of it all,and things get better.

I saw a front wheel come off a Greyhound coach many years ago on the old Pacific HWY,Springwood, career through a car yard, bouncing off cars, and then disappeared over the back fence.

    Bloody dangerous.

The last thing any truck driver wants is a blown or falling off steer tyre/wheel.

In a 64 ton B Double the outcome can be fatal. Thankfully it is extremely rare.

Same reason the front suspension is springs not air bag. The rest of the combination, prime mover rears and all trailer suspension are airbag.

If airbag was on the front axle and a bag bursts, as they do from time to time, the results again would be not pretty.

When you have 32 wheels you often don't miss one or two.

Steer excepted. Yes, a blown steer can ruin your whole day.

10 or 15 years ago a double tipper lost a complete pair off his trailer on the Western Freeway at Rockbank, west of Melb. The things traveled nearly a kilometer before they killed some por bloke coming the other way.
