The surprise of people in here that a $5 plastic tub becomes brittle is astounding!
I have black tubs in my shed that have been in use 20 years - they cost more and have lasted.
Those cheap “clear” tubs are just that.
Rubber compounds are now made to suit application, and price. Anything black has carbon in it and combined with oils from environment and skin oils will degrade over time.

Yep, and in those clear tubs the plasticiser evapourates over time (accelerated if in sunlight) - even the temp cycling in a shed can accelerate it.Quote:

Elastomer compunds are a compromise - to get flexability, or longevity etc demands different blends and their associated price tags.
Those cheaper Kayaks are usually made of Polyethylene - and rotomoulded - its quite resilient, not so brittle, but the sun can warp it out of shape
The black tubs from places like NQR ( so not expensive ) are often made in Australia. Guess which ones I buy :) Clear chinese made tubs always break up with a little age .... always.
Barrel Brothers (wheel refurb mob) had the same issue, so now they make their own. Quite durable, reasonably priced and Aussie made.
Tough enough that old mate can stand on them.

Hello All,
The galvanised crate I bought on the weekend is has the following dimensions Length 560 mm x Width 430 mm x 530 mm height. There were no markings on it. When I checked crate I have had in the shed for years it could have been the newly acquired crate's twin. The crate in the shed still had a metal plaque on it that was a bit hard to decipher - it looked something like "This is the property of Australian Glass MFR PTY LTD."
Has anyone come across these galvanised crates before? Do you know what they were manufactured to store or transport around?
