Hello All,
Just wondering if there are any glass vase enthusiasts who are knowledgeable about the styles of vase and the history behind a particular style?
When my wife's paternal-side Grandfather died she inherited a glass vase. The vase unfortunately was already cracked. No one in the family knew anything about the vase's history - including how old it was and when it was bought. The old bloke trained as a pattern maker and liked aesthetics.
Not long after we got the vase the crack opened up and the vase split into two. It was then thrown out. However, I really liked the vase and have been looking for a similar one on and off since the 1990s.
Tonight I found two similar vases and they both originated in Japan. One example, shown is from Iwatsu Hineri Japan glass from a company that was based in Osaka, Japan, that operated in the 1960s and 1970s, then closed in the 1990s. There is also an example described as 'Retro' that was sold under the name of Regal Japan Art Glass.
What I would like to know is whether this style of glass vase was unique to Japan or whether it is a copy of a style that originated elsewhere? If so, where would that be? Also, how old would the style be?
I did find a couple of Murano glass vases from Italy that did look a little similar to the vase we had. However, the Japanese vases that I found tonight look closer to the one we had that cracked and broke.
Dimensions wise the vase we had was around the 300 mm mark in height. It was also very heavy.
Does this style of vase have a name?
The vase in the photograph has a different top opening then the vase we had. The vase we had was more like this black or amethyst coloured throat. However, the more organic-looking amethyst vase's throat is more constricted and the lobes more elongated than the vase we had.

Hi Lionel,
I'm not a glass enthusiast, but many years ago I had the pleasure of knowing the founders of Glass Manifesto.
The first vase reminds me of Anne Clifton's work, and I can say I'm the proud owner of one of her pieces much like that one. Check out her Gem series.

Perhaps you could drop them a line with your query?
Cheers,
Mike
