Off Road Ability D2 vs P38

We have a D2 with Self levelling rear & no ACE (financial controller) and a 1999 Thor 4.0 RR (mine for work). The RR is a better ride on road and with EAS is better off road in standard form. The viscous coupling has never stopped the RR off road although I have never had it on sand. 4 wheel TC is a must on any model and this was only available post 1999 on the RR (as Ron states). Actually, the stock RR with BFG All Terrains is great in most terrain. We are surveyors and I think we give it a good work out without wanted to try & break anything.

1999 P38a RR 4.0 (work)
2002 D2 Auto 7 seat (shopping trolly about to LPG'd)
1995 v8 D1 manual ES (work)

P38 has no centre diff lock. Viscous coupling. Can be locked though not cheap. My neighbours P38 has twin diff locks and rear wheel t/c only. Now only needs more travel to keep it smooth. Sounds better than disco td.

I cant comment on the D2 but I have owned a 97 D1 ES before my current car a P38 4.6 HSE. The P38 is easily better in standard form Then D1. The only main issue is turning, in that the longer wheel base of the p38 wont allow it to turn quite as quickly. Allot of people dismiss the P38 which is a shame as it is also weopon off road.

I was under the impression that the D1/D2/P38a had the same wheel base, 100".

No D1 is a 100 inch wheel base the P38 is 108 inches.

Mmmmm D2 cheaper yes P38 more capable no at the stage of the P38 LR decided it could up the comfort of the P38 lossing the edge of the older RR so yes the D2 ia more capable

lets face it all LR a weapons even the humble freelander thats not spoken of much I mean keeping it in its league against a RAV4 I know what I would rather ;)

I believe the P38 came in 2 sizes - the HSE (108) and the SE (100). Someone was telling me recently that with the HSE they squeezed in the extra 8" for rear passenger leg room.... :angel:
