Internet Company Grrrrr

All this drama reminds me of round 2000 when ADSL was the new thing, one ISP would say yes you can get it, oh then no, then the next ISP so on and so forth, with no end to it all.

back then the legend ISPs were Internode (Simon Hackett), Westnet, iinet (Michael Malone), TPGi as they offered unlimited packages (with a acceptable use policy) it was great for gaming and being online.
While Telstra offered unlimited but with a asterisk, well it was unlimited as in the bill, I had seen numerous home users with bills from Telstra for $700 - $900 for a month back in the days of $20 per month ADSL. I swore I would never recommend or use Telstra.

I started with TPGi used Internode, iinet, Westnet (all owned by TPG now) and decades later I'm still with iinet (TPG).

Yep. The big T will never get another $$ from me*. I was on first name terms with the Ombudsman, well the rep, and a cuople of people at an exec level at T regarding a number of rather extraordinary bills I received.

I went to iPrimus, was happy with them until ADSL2+ came along. They said they couldn't offer it at my place, even though the exchange work was performed by T. The DSLAMs were there. So, iiNet. Great service for ages. But, TPG bought them, the NBN came along, and it all fell apart. I HAD to have a physical landline here back then, and they were happy to charge me for it but they were not happy to maintain it. I'm using Tangerine as a placeholder until I am ready for the road and then it will be StarLink. Where I live the NBN sucks, and there is no mobile service 30 Km from the CBD and I can see the city from upstairs. It's a joke for a major first world city to have such poor comms. I get better service in Thailand.

*Well, my mobile is currently with Aldi, who port from T.

Well if that sticks in your craw you could try Do-Do $ 5 p/m Phone, Data a couple of $ extra calls OZ wide, Owned by Sing tel via OPTUS Both our phones are through them.

Best ISP I’ve found (been and tested several) is currently Superloop.

The purchase significant bandwidth and I’ve never seen them hit capacity in our region during peak use.

Consistent, no drop outs, clear comms when NBN will be taking the area down for service/upgrade.

Decent pricing too.


Unfortunately NbN co decided to leave copper here (FTTN) and we cap out at 98MBs unlike my Adelaide mate running at near a Gig.

It would be nice to have in an emergency, but the above is the last thing I want in the Simpson Desert, specially music.

I like to go to these places to get away from this crap and enjoy the serenity.

And if I wanted music, I would not need internet for that.

Did it last August. Started at Mount Dare and crossed the Madigan line to Birdsville.

Plans are in the making to do a double crossing next August.

Starting at Birdsville and traveling the French Line to Mt Dare and returning along the Madigan line.
