Realistically, probably still at least 5 years away before we see level 4 and 5 self driving vehicles in use in Australia on public roads.

A lot more trials will be needed to prove the systems can truly drive without the need for intervention.

The real challenge is achieving level 4 and 5 at high speed. Works for low speed in controlled environments like on mine sites, but high speed on public roads and interacting with unpredictable humans is much more challenging.

Transurbans approach though looks promising as the roads communicate with the trucks, so will be an important trial once it gets underway again.
