the boys beat me and posted the link to the thread that i started a while ago

have heard some of the west coast tracks are tough, i heard there are some snad dunes near queenstown where you can go and play.

The dunes near queenstown are the henty dunes, haven't been there myself. You can also get onto ocean beach from near strahn, but that's almost 2wd country, well, except for the quicksand on the northern end of the beach.

Peron dunes at StHellens is another one (this is where the buggies race on the east coast) as well as the track from bridport to bellingham in the north.

I am in Tassie.
That time of the year the West is very cruisy,
all the same have other vehicles with you; you can come to grief any time of the year if you are not carefull and do not know the area or tracks on the West.

Make sure you drive from Temma down to Sandy Cape. Heaps better that the Henty Dunes. Better than Stockton.

Do yourself a favour and drive from Granville Harbour in to the Pieman River.

Very dangerous in the winter but summer with a cnvot you will have a ball.

The East coast is pretty but the West is where it happens. 4WD, Diving Surfing, Fishing and Bike riding.

Ive been to Tassie a few times, It depends on your time and interests.

Yes Cradle Mountain, Lake Dove etc are great, good hiking if you are into that. The Usual Touristy things are good, however, you will be over there whilst the twilight sailing races are on.

Pretty hard not to get yourself on a boat for the races. Even if you don't go for a race, Give bellrive (not spelt right) yacht club a ring, and take yourself or family out for a sail. (forget motor launches it's not the same).

Anyway - Enjoy your Trip.

The seal and penguin touirs run out of Stanely are also great fun and very informative...and not too costly. The BEST fish and chip meal can be had at Kermies on the wharf at Stanley. Worth a visit if you are on the north coast.

As has been mentioned above make sure you explore the Pieman area. Especially the drive from Granville harbour along the coast. Can't remember the name of the track at the minute but it's not too bad. Some of the bridges are a little rickety to say the least.

Drive up the beach at Straughn as Pheonix has said. Some great sand dunes at Badger river (i think thats the name).

East coast is much tamer in my opinion. Central highlands are fantastic. Great freshwater fishing and nice camping areas with plenty of firewood (generally).

Have fun. Tassie is one of the last great wilderness areas on the planet.
