000 works via any network not just your own provider as well JT. Take your sim card out and it may still call 000[thumbsupbig]

That may mean even if your network is off another may connect you to emergency.


The Whatsapp and VIOP services can connect so as Dave (Blacknight) pointed out. Home WIFI required of course for that!

A PLB might be another cheap option and they work anywhere! I have a EPIRB in my boat for use if needed a LONG way away from land.

Yes, James. I know that. But the emergency app requires service from a carrier. I often have none here. I think Dave might be on to something. My home wifi is set up so that my ISP router is NOT the wifi hub, I have a much better router that takes care of that. Maybe that's the issue with wifi calling for me. Up until now nI've never cared.

I have had calling over WiFi enabled previously, you need to disable your VPN, let’s say it is dodgy at best from my experience. Plenty of delay, pretty much unusable.

I wonder how well that app works in different states. I noticed that there are shortcuts to the generic 000, non-emergency police and SES.
In Queensland, SES are not a self activating service, they have to be activated by the authority (QFS, QPS) under which they operate.
Where do the calls to SES go, a different number in each state?

It’s the same number in QLD & NSW. I’ve been out of telcos for a while but 13 numbers (132 500 for SES) were called premium numbers, a little like 1800 and calls are routed to an answering point based on either the CLI (calling line identification) or the location in the case of mobile, so potentially same numbers nationally but answered at the relevant service location.

Welcome to the future folks. And I see that power bills are set to rise. Reflects the amazing levels of service I guess. Same with telcos.

The marvelous up to date system may theoretically be the bees' knees, but the practicality is vastly different.
I had an instance in northern NSW where I had to call 000. It rang out, twenty minutes later I got a call back from an operator in SA. Fortunately, no-one was being mudered, having a heart attack or stroke.

To the best of my knowledge, 132500 in Queensland is only activated during emergencies/disasters.

000 services were outsourced sometime ago, may still be. I called 000 15 or so years ago to report a grass fire expecting it to answered locally (NSW) but it transpired it was answered in SA too! I had a lot of trouble explaining exactly where the fire was as they required an address all I could give them was next to the toll booths on the M2 motorway.

The transferring of 24/7 numbers also happens with councils. A few years ago I rang the Scenic Rim Council one weekend night to report a tree down on a main road and it was answered by the Brisbane council call centre.
