I looked at many Discos before buying mine. Only a few in yards as they were always overpriced and made of gold when you made an offer.

I lost count of the times I heard "This is a lot of car for the money".
Then when you point out the problems they say "yes but they all have that".

I love that insulted look they give when you make an offer and say they can sell it to another dealer for more than that. Then you see it in their yard months later.

On the days when we were poor in sydney (read off pay week) me and SWMBO used to have some fun with the local dealers...

We'd go in in my clapped out rover, dressed to the nines for us, claiming that weve just inherited some money and we'd like to upgrade, Im a mechanic by trade and Im not too worried about what i get so long as its got on demand permanant 4x4 is in good nick and you'll let me put it up on the hoist and have a nosey at the underside... but honestly I still prefer my old rover vut as long as my love and strife is happy well......

SO swmbo goes and has a sticky in the yard while I watch drinking coffee and discussing the "tech and history" of the vehicles shes looking at with the service guy. At this point we have at least 2 of the staff tied up and we're being really friendly with everyone, like we really want a nice easy deal.

one gets picked out, test drive done up on hoist sometimes to be yeah I like that shes all sweet other times, nahh im a bit concerned about that crack/mark/worn bush there. Have you got anything similar? or if I picked the car when Im all happy SWMBO pipes in with... but i dont like the color.

Then as they're filling out the paper work We'll spot something more expensive that we'd rather have and we'll ask questions while one rings the others mobile. One quick fake conversation about something urgent at work and without leaving a number we promise to return later to complete the transaction.

always good for a free coffee or 2 and fill in a saturday.

Someone oncetook a survey of peooples occupations. They discovered that the occupations held in lowest esteem by Australians are:- Prison warders, police informers, military policemen, used car and real estate salespersons.

I can understand the rest but why prison warders? They do a #@*) of a job and have to put up with constant crap from inmates
    And I'm not a prison warder - and I don't think I know any

I think it is the type of person the job attracts - my son's mother in law is one - and I have to say the job suits her personality exactly.

When I test drove the last car from a yard the salesman asked me to leave something there with him such as my licence. As I was getting it out he casually asked which car I came in. When I told him he said I could leave the keys to that instead. Sure I'll leave you the keys to my $70k work truck so I can test drive your $7k Disco (the brakes were scary, master cylinder was leaking).
He was offended when I laughed and said no way.
