I was out yesterday looking at Bathroom stuff as i'm doing up the Bathroom. Well while i was driving i spotted a Fender Ute in a yard in Melb, Dandenong to be exact.....
Well i went in and found it like all the rest had not been cleaned or detailed.... thats good for spotting problems, but who would buy a dirty car???? well i suppose i would...
Anyhow i went over and asked about it.
1996, 300tdi, tray Ute. Rough..... Real Rough,...
220k on the clock, but no logbooks... so its done more....
He started it and i stepped back when i heard the Tappety rattle..... it was top end, but could just be adjustment or worse....
Its been in the yard for2 months and he has had no offer over 5k.... Laugh... its not worth that...
He tried to tell me a rebuild was only $1k, i told him a timing kit for the 300 was $500 so how was a rebuild an extra $500 including gaskets and rings and labour... He looked blank.... that was better then the looks he was giving my missus... where is a lump of 4x2 when you need it...
Then i asked to drive it, he said as long as i was going to buy it i could drive it. I said Bite me.....
I looked further to find the Tray was welded to the chassis, and 2 of the out riggers broken clean off, the back was twisted and the tank was new..... Weird....
No panel was straight and the trim was shagged....
220k???? no way........
Doors did not shut properly and some bolts were missing from the body to chassis.....
Steering arms bent and he claimede it had a lift of 2"
Mmmmm with Std markings on the coils.... dont think so...
I tried to coorect him several times about things he "KNEW" but he just argued......
Anyhow i told him it was overpriced at $8k and said i was not interested unless he dropped $5k off it. He was insulted and Discusted and walked off......
What is wrong with these guys.....
Sad engine, bent steering, damaged body, chassis welded directly to???
Its stuffed.....
The classic quote from him.
"All Landrovers are built like this and all have the body and Trays welded to them"
So anyhow the best thing about it...... Near new Cooper ST's
And the $8k was without a RWC.......
DREAM ON.

Yeah, they do, but he will keep telling the same story and eventually some poor bastard will be stuck with it, sounds to me as though its a rebirth or something and its been bolted together from a couple of written off vehicles to make one whole one.
They will tell you anything though. A mate of mine went into a holden dealership and asked to buy a car just like Mark Skaife races. He walks him over to the SS on the show room floor and points to it, here you go, exactly the same but no roll cage. 5.7L motor (yeah right, i but skaife wishes his was 5.7L), he did get the 6 speed box bit right but thats where the similarites end. My mate pointed out all his mistakes and left the salesman there to ponder what had happened and walked out.
It ****es me off cause people who know nothing about cars take what these guys say at face value and get ripped off big time.

G'day All , that reminds me of a clown who had a car yard in Kurri Kurri about 10 klicks from home, I had seen a Stage 1 for sale in the yard and i knew it had been modified to have a Range Rover coil spring front end instead of leaf springs. So I told this dum s**t that I was just curious and wanted to look at the modifications that had been done to this vehicle, the slaes jerk insisted that it was a factory modified Land Rover done just prior to the 110 release hence the coil sprung front end, I started to tell him that no such vehicle ever existed, he went on to great lenghts to convince me that this was a really scarce Land Rover. What a jerk some poor sod who knew stuff all about Land Rovers could have been sucked in by this clown, imagine a scarce Land Rover factory modifed that no-one else knows about except for this clown that is trying to unload it on some unsuspecting person, would you buy a Stage 1 V8 with coil front end and the Dumb Irons still hanging out in front and the shackle bush still in the chassis as a real "BUY" then I told him I knew the bloke who did the conversion,I left before he blew a gasket stupid 'B' anyway they will try anything cheers Dennis

Thats it, they dont care who they upset, as long as someone eventually swallows the story and he makes a sale, to someone who thinks they are getting a rare land rover. MattOriginally Posted by Dinty

I agree mate. I have been sucked in a few times myself but not with a landy I must admit. But then again thats what happens when you are in the "extremely cheapie" market as I have been in the past. BUT what about jokers selling landies on the web as well. And these arent dealers but private people coming out with the most absurd prices and stories of their landies. Im just amazed at some of the prices these people want for their landies. And im not talking discos or defender. SII and SIII at unbelievable prices![]()

Saw a ad this weekend for a restored SII in the local paper for $13,500. Mate at that price it needs to be made of GOLD. Or how about this bloke in South Australia that wants $8750 for a S3 game on Trading Post. Huh... thats the better part of 10K for a 1978 Game! Yes they were a limited release but there were a LOT more made than 250 as he claims in the ad.. and somebody will fall for the story I suppose!
Others are serious rust buckets with a ton of things wrong and they all say "But Land Rovers are made of aluminium and cant rust". Yea right...![]()
Cheers

New car dealers are just as bad. I went with my sister to help her buy a car (toyota corolla). One large toyota dealer just north of the city (Brisbane), tried to convince us (after supposedly phoning around) that there were no vehicles available anywhere in OZ (nor would there be for the next 2 months) except for the higher spec model they had in their lot. We walked out, and went to another toyota dealer who not only had three of the same vehicle (but the base model) in their lot, they also gave my sister the choice of any colour she wanted - and for a very good price!!!

we had a look at freelander over parramatta way, we asked for test drive but had to agree to buy the car if we test drove it, then had to hand over driving licnce and credit card.
whilst this was happening the diesal engine on the freelander just ran away, lou shut it off before it went to far, the dealer said the choke needed adjustment, i suggested that there was no choke on a diesal and eventually had three sales men telling me i was stupid and what did i know. needless to say we left the dealer fully aware that car dealers here are as trustworthy and honest as the uk.
Blokes, I agree. Ibought a jeep a year and ahalf ago and I said that I didn't want it for the price if the wheels on it (American racing wheels 15") were not 15 x 8's. I got under there and looked and could not find the size. It had 31" tyres on it so they could have been 7" or 8" wide but the dude said that he was sure they were 8" wide rims and even asked the guy who suppossedely bought them for the previous owner (the service manager) and he came out and said that they were definately 8" wide. So I buy the car and it turns out after a few months that I put some spring spacers in and when I take the wheels off lo and behold they are 15 x 7" wheels which means that even if I wanted to I couldn't fit larger width tyres. Which is originally what I wanted to do when I bought the car. They will tell you anything to make a sale they even said that it had a 2" body lift and pointed to the rubber pads betwen the body and the chasis. Which by the way I saw on every new car on the floor. What a bunch of bullshutters.
Thank god I bought the car I had been dreaming of for 10 years a p38. At least all of its shortcomings are fixed with copious amounts of cash.
