Preparing for wading

On my Defender the plugs were supplied in the tool kit. In fact I have not seen them for awhile - I might just check.

I must say I was impressed by those water crossing pics post here today. I'd never have the nuts to try it though I have a Tdi with snorkel nad a tarp in the car at all times.

Point is though, one day you might have to try it in an emergency like it or not so it pays to think about it.

The idea of pre-prepping the recovery straps is a good one and is now filed away upstairs. Thanks

As for the snorkel, does the original air box get replaced because mine has a few holes on the base to let out solids such as sand etc etc, so naturally this would be a problem under water!! Also, the snorkel installs on the side, and currently the air box inlet hole is pointing towards the front.

For the snorkel to be any good you need all the holes sealed. Any joints will need a rubber seal or silicone as well. If they arn't you will discover it the hrd way. At least I now know mine was done properly as I took mine swimming early on and only thought about what I was doing once the thing was slowly sinking to the bottom. Before that I brain was saying its a 4wd so it ok to do these things.

I have added a small extension from my distribution pump on my 200tdi,
i did this after it failed and was found to be full of mud,
should not of really happened but im not risking that again.

They are 1/4 BSP pipe plugs (for Tdi timing housings and manual transmission bellhousings).

If your local hardware doesn't have these, a plumbers supplies should or a hydraulics shop will definitely have them (in steel, brass or stainless, hexagon or socket head).

Pardon my ignorance, but what/where is the distribution pump? I don't have a 200Tdi, but a couple of 300Tdi.

I went around looking for some kind of small air filters to attach to the end of the axle breather hoses (after I extended them) and cannot find any suppliers that have them! Where are they sourced? Surely someone must have these small filters....

And another thing, there is a bell housing plug as well, so one for the timing cover and one for the bell housing. Just bought the 2 plugs, so im set :)

Just remember you are not supposed to leave those plugs in permanently. It's so any leaking oil can drain out.

When I did my Rangie I just used Ryco Z14A inline fuel filters.

the distribution pump on the 200tdi, im guessing same on 300tdi, is on the right of the engine, it delivers and controls fuel to injectors, mega money for new ones so look after it.
