When a hot car parks in long dry grass like that, particularly petrols with the cat converter the hot exhaust simply sets the dry grass on fire. Subarus utes are notorius (nothing wrong with subies) for this because they are much lower as some cocky parks it in a paddock in long grass and then returns to an inferno. A friend of mine works for and agronomy company in the riverina and they arent allowed to have petrol work utes for this reason, if they drive into some farmers wheat crop to do some tests the hot exhaust on petrol engines sets the crop alight. Last couple of summers there have been several cases round here where apparently someone has pulled off the bitumen to answer their phone etc, stopped for a few minutes and driven off leaving a patch of smouldering grass, which soon turns into a real fire - result of everything being so dry.

I saw a Commodore burn roadside between Logan Village & Waterford. Hot cat. converter in dry grass. Firies at scene said this is a common occurence. To add some bush knowledge to the char-grilled Toyota scene, spinifex is a resinous plant and burns like gunpowder.Originally Posted by JDNSW
