    Series LWB Legalities

    Hello all,
I hope this is the right area to be posting.
I am wondering if anyone knows the legalities with regards to driving your land rover with the windscreen folded down and also are you allowed to carry people in the back. Because the rear seats are factory fitted I don't see how I could get in trouble for this but I just wanted to check. Also there are no seatbelts.
The land rover is a series 2a ex military 109".
    Thanks for your help.

As far as I know if the vehicle was manufactured to do it or not do it and it has been complianced you are allowed to do all of the above

    Hi Peter
I would say as a troop carrier it should be legal with the original army seating with no seatbelts as they were never fitted.
HOWEVER what I think you are eluding to is the ban on any passengers in a ute tray.I would get the army troop seats, fit them(they were dead simple anyhow) and then get some kind of certification from Transport WA or what they call themselves now that the vehicle is an original TROOP CARRIER,not a ute.
Goodluck, sometimes its easier to headbutt a brick wall and get more sense when dealing with that mob.

I checked this very matter with Queensland Transport some time ago, and their advise is, If it was originally certified to operate in this mode than I can get registration to-day to operate the vehicle in the same mode.

However the fellow did say to me did I really want my kids riding in the back with no seat belts

Problem with "originally certified" is that unless it was a Series 3 or late 2a - there were no ADRs - so there WAS no certification. But I think there should be no problems with legality carrying passengers on the standard seats in the back, but I would be inclined to fit seat belts, even though they are not required.
As far as the windscreen goes, legalities do not enter into it - it is designed to fold, same as the top is removeable or the door tops. Whether it is legal to drive with the lower doors removed (after Series 1) may be another matter, as they are not "lift off".

This is why I love OLD landrovers.... you only have to comply to the ADR's in effect at the time the vechile was plated.... My 66 IIA for instance I can have it roof less without a roll bar, fit seats wherever I like and not have to worry about seatbelts... So sayeth Vic roads, The Queensland RTA and the WA cop shop down the road from dad.

Bout the only things I really have to worry about for road worthy are head lights, indicators, a horn and some form of functionality from those things that pass as brakes in a Series IIA SWB.

The only thing I want to do but cant without certification is convert to a spring over axle setup and aparently thats legal in the NT and so long as the vehicle comes out of the state roadworthy and I dont let it expire Im all good....
(can someone in the NT confirm this for me PM me if you like)

G'day All, As most of you would be aware we use my Land Rovers in parades etc, we do have people seated/standing in the back of 88" GS for the parade/s. I have driven several of my GS 88" with the windscreen folded down and not had a look by the constabulary, I also drive my gunbuggy with no doors (not fitted with any) and on occassions with the areo-screens off and I have not had any problems at all, very wet here today so I dont think that i would like to be out in any of them cheers Dennis

    Thankyou for the replys guys.
LandyAndy is correct, in WA you cannot ride in a load space. The original seats are there but because it is an FFR someone has stripped the radio gear out and put in 2 home made bench seats. A bit dodge, I will try and source 2 new ones.
Does anyone know where I can get these ? New or old ?

Also, to fold the windscreen down, you have to remove those trims above the doors, correct ?

    Cheers !

Ummmm If memory serves, either the bloke at the show that I last saw a IIa FFR at had fitted em or, it should have 2 little jump seats fitted right at the back for the operators to sit on.

Think along the lines of the sideways mounted seats in the current 110 GS but only wide enough to sort of get one ass on instead of 3. and IMHO if you fitted the original sideways seats from one of them the RTA or equivilent would likely not know the difference.

The standard seats - interchangeable from Series 2 to 110, and I think even Series 1 - only difference is upholstery - should be available from any Landrover specialist wrecker, for example Four Wheel Drives in Melbourne or Land Vehicle Spares in Sydney, but there is a good chance someone here has some - put a wanted ad in the marketplace.

To fold the windscreen down you have to at least unbolt the front of the upper door frame(and I'd take it right off to save it waving in the wind and possible damage - when I have driven with the windscreen down I have had the hood bows and complete upper door frame off, as well as the door tops.
