1/3 party covers any vehicle you have an accident with, not your vehicle.

This is Martine and Robert, Frenchies on world tour with Landy. We are having difficulty regarding insurance for Australia as it will be on temporary registration for 12 months AND it is a Left Hand Drive.
Difficulties are several:
- it seems that anything else BUT 1/3 party is impossible to find in our case
- so far we got 2 quotes for 425 AUD for 1/3 party. And needless to say, details about excess, and so on are not given with quotes...
- we are not even sure of what 1/3 party actually covers or not. Again, details are not given qith quotes...
ANYBODY WORKS IN THE INSURANCE BUSINESS AND COULD ANSWER SOME OF OUR QUESTIONS?
ANYBODY COULD REFER US TO A FRIENDLY BROKER WHO COULD ANSWER SOME QUESTIONS FOR US?
Any other suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Email if preferred is info@kookynet.net

Glen,
it's a great suggestion that we should look it up with a club!
Ok, third party does not cover damages to our own vehicle. That would be done by a comprehensive, except that it seems impossible to get for a foreign registration car, as will be the case for us.
AS to third party, when you say covers damages to other car: does that mean only to people (physical damage) or car damages as well?
If I understood correctly, bodily damages caused to a passenger in your own car would be covered by insurance taken with MRV when we will register the car. But I am not even certain that it would cover bodily damage to another driver. Any clue there?
Thanks again for your suggestion, I'll put the question with some clubs and see if they could cover us in their package if we joined.

the other vehicle will be covered for damage and the occupants are covered by CTP that is with the MV.

TdiautoManual d1 (gave it to the Mupion)

If you've benefited from one or more of my posts please remember, your taxes paid for my skill sets, I'm just trying to make sure you get your monies worth.
If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
I think TCIS is underwritten by Alliance ( or used to be ). I went directly with Alliance and the policy looks the same. Alliance is a European based company so maybe you can call Alliance from over there.
Glen, thanks for explaining that CTP is indeed covered with MV.
Wayne, thanks for suggesting Alliance, good point and I will inquire.
Dave, thanks for pointing to Shannons, will try. A great big thank you for the invite too! Im not very good with Aussie geography -yet. Where are you located? And could you please give us a telephone number? Are you OK with SMS, as for us it will be the most convenient way to liaise with you once we get closer to where you are.
Will let you know how things evolve on the insurance front and... might get back with a new set of questions once we get into the details of premiums and what they cover.
Cheers and thanks again

Martine & Robert,
To drive on Australian Roads your vehicle will need to be registered here, I am unaware of any agreement that permits a foreign registered vehicle to operate within Australia for any period of time.
Vehicle can be registered in any State of Australia and operate anywhere within Australia.
Part of the cost of registration is a component called Comprehensive Third Party Insurance (CTP) and represents the major portion of the cost of the registration. This covers injury to persons including passengers within the vehicle in the event of an accident. This is manditory.
Within Queensland the Nominal Defendant is sued for costs.Other members maybe able to assist with other States.
There are generally two other forms of insurance you can take out one is fully comprehensive insurance and covers repairs to your vehicle and the other vehicle (If there is one)
The other form of insurance is generally known as Third Party, and covers the cost of repairs to the other vehicle but not your own.
As it appears you will be landing in Western Austalia you had best check out the requirements of that State
First link is in regards to importing a vehicle and second link is in regards to international drivers licence

Hope this helps
....and of course you would be aware that the other States of Australia are all under par when compared to Queensland![]()

Third Party Insurance covers property. It will cover a car you might crash into, or a powerpole you may damage, or a house you might crash into etc.
Some insurance companies offer Third Party Fire & Theft. RACV (RAC Victoria) offers this cover. This protects third party property and also pays out for your car if it's stolen or burnt, but not if it's damaged in a crash.
As Rob said, once the vehicle is registered in any Australian state, most of that money goes toward insurance to cover anyone hurt in a motor vehicle accident, whether it be in your vehicle or another.
Rob, thanks for the link to these pages from DPI. I had not been able to find such details as opening hours and all that. Also, your explanation is quite clear. To answer to your comment as to a foreign car re registration, the info we have is that we will get temporary registration which will waive for us need to alter vehicle and all that for a period of up to 12 months, because we are on a tourist visa, not resident and because our car travels on a Carnet. We will see if this theory is indeed followed by the authorities, as we hope it will. Will let you know as soon as it is cleared.
Michael, thanks for the info re 1/3 party fire and theft, I was not aware of this option. Thanks also for the details as to the fact that TPI covers other damaged property than just another car, good to know...
I'll get back to you with some news as soon as all this is finalised. I'll make sure that I will put it all in writing so that the next time a foreigner bugs you again with tons of questions, you'll have it all for them.
Thanks again for the info and the support. It is warming and works great on our moral.
