    Fraser Island Trip

    Hi All,
Well as luck would have it in 2 weeks time i will be somewhere on fraser island!

We head off from Newcastle on sunday the 15th so hope to be on Fraser on Monday or Tuesday and we will be on the island for 10-12 days - Last time i was there was about 13-14 years ago with my family when i was a teenager now finialy I am going back and I cant wait!

At the moment i am just going through all the last minute things, getting the truck sorted out, getting my camping gear sorted out, organising food, sorting out maps of the area etc etc

Now this being the first trip of this sort i have ever undertaken/planned, i thought i would post and see if anyone can make any suggestions or reminders on what i might over look. Also maybe get some feedback about where to go on Fraser of some off the locals or regulars to the area.

We are looking at camping on the beach rather then at the campsites and will be traveling alone - Just Me and Natasha.

    I will be taking:-

    Camping gear-
    Swag (for single night stops)
    Tent
    Several tarps
pegs, sand pegs, poles, ropes etc
    Fold up table and chairs
    Shower tent
    Hot water setup
    Sleeping bags and travel pillows
    several torches
    2 gas lamps

    Food stuff -
    Gas cooker with LPG bottle
    another really small gas cooker
    pots/pan/plates/knifes etc etc
    vacum packed meat
    lots of tinned food
    various snack foods
    long life milk
20L jerry can of drinking water
several other large bottles of drinking water
    many cans of soft drink
    large bottle of Bundy Rum

    Other stuff-
    Laptop and GPS for navigation
inverter to run my 240 stuff
2 jumpstart packs to run stuff when stopped (no dual battery)
    clothing/towels etc
    snorkelling gear
    shovel and axe
    recovery gear

Well at the moment thats all that comes to mind, but i am sure theres other stuff i am forgetting..

As for the truck, It just got serviced yesterday, I will be greasing up the tailshafts and probobly change the diff oil etc on the weekend and give it a last minute check out, i will also be doing some extra water proofing on the airbox for the creek crossings just in case. I will be taking a small assortment of tools, spare airfilter, WD40, spare oil etc

So can anyone give me some more pointers about going to fraser, whats considered a must see and maybe some areas that are not so well known to tourist where i might be able to get away from the dreaded troupies full of foreingers i have heard so much about. I will be using Oziexplorer and using the Hema maps of the area. Also if and where i get a pass to drive and camp on the island.

    Thanks,

    Mick.

have you thought about driving from noosa to inskip point via teewah beach, not that you will any more sand driving but its a nice drive as you go past the coloured sands, the cherry venture wreck and if your keen a walk up to the double island ppoint light house, you will need to plan around high tide and a possible long diversion around the rocks at rainbow beach if there is no sand

probably best to consider for the drive home as you can check the rocks out at rainbow and make a decision cause they are riight at rainbow beach

Came back not long ago (1mth for 7days) and use to go there a fair bit up to the cape.
    Things to watch out for,
don't leave your rubbish in the open, ie dingo's, theres dumpmasters all along the beach do a dump run every day,
Eli creek depth, the taker of many veh's,
there's camping stops set asside watchout you don't stray beyond these, the Parks don't like you much if you do,
if you get on to the tailor (fish), if there still in numbers, you can only remove off the island 30 per person over 2-3 days check when you get your permit at rainbow,
dart are there all year round in the gutters
the tradingpost at Orchard beach only carry's the bear min and fuel was diesel 1.84lt,
theres another store/fuel at dili (sorry Eurong) and small workshop,
soft sand coming of the barge for +/- 5ks and any exist off the beach are usaully chewed up ie Indian head ect.
watch your speed up the beach (radar) and breatho's as well, police were in force when we were there.
swim at the fresh lagoons or Eli have some nice pics of sharks (giggest 12ft) in the surf.
top up ya tank at either Gympie then Rainbow or just at rainbow (fuel was 9c more at Rainbow) go across to the bakers and grab one of there "bloody" nice pies
Other than that when you get your permit for the island/barge they have a small forest of reading/pretty pics to grab.
Heading back up there a xmas (from Ade) with the missus & kids so have a good time and look around.
More of the good people on the sight have come back not long ago, they might be able to "update" you better.
    Cheers

    Good to here Mick

As Weiry says make sure you rubbish is locked away... it will attract the dingoes - and if they don't get it the goannas will!

The shop Weiry says is at Dili.... is actually at Eurong.. just down the hill from the bakery. ULP was $181.9 per ltr Deisel was $183.9 last week

I see from your profile you're at Stockton - if you are used to stockton beach - you won't find the sand too much drama... I coped fine with pretty minimal sand experience..

If I didn't have the kids with me I'd have camped in the dunes too...

Probably somewhere just south of Eli creek...

    Have a great time...
